 Raleigh reptile show

I went to the reptile and exotic animal show in raleigh nc on sunday.. i only got some 50 frozen mice for 40 bucks which i thought was awesome!!! and my friend bought a jungle carpet snake... it was a nice show.. actually my first.. they had an elephant and all sorts of exotic animals like emu’s for 50 bucks a pop ... but alot of the stuff i saw was just unfair to the consumer... i know all of you have commented on the terrible conditions hatchling monitors are put under... and i saw those piles of sav’s first hand... but i was completely unprepared for what happened.. i never thought i would want to buy another monitor so soon .. but the prices were unbeatable and i justified it all in my head that i had the space for another and i will have the money... it took everything i had in me to not buy another monitor already... but then the sympathy set in: they were all in containers just too small for them .. their tails were wrapped around them in small circular containers shorter in diameter than their torso.. now i just wanted to buy them to release them from the pain... and i think this is unfair.. ooo but i saw a blackthroat full grown and the guy at the booth was trying to say he would double in size growing to like 9 or ten feet... i laughed.. that would fly in a non reptile lover crowd... but not at a reptile show. .. but in the end of the day i was so proud of myself for resisting to buy another monitor... i rationalized the decision by telling myself i will go home and do research on other monitors to see which kind i would get and maybe next time... (i felt like i was talking to a child..)

I wish I could say the same thing. I was not expecting to get anything there.

There was a dumeril monitor in very good shape and I am a softy for dumerils. It is very hard to find them that are not dehydrated and sickly. This one was a nice, active female that was not skinny. I have it home now. I either need to find a male in nice shape or someone that wants a nice dumeril female. Either way I will be thrilled. I knew that if I did not get it, it would not stay in good shape long.

Hey, check out www.rodentpro.com or some other online rodent suppliers. You’ll find much better prices than the .80/mouse you paid at the show.

I understand your pain in wanting to purchase a monitor because it is kept in poor conditions. But you made the right choice. If one less person purchases one less monitor, one less dealer has made less money. Decrease the demand and drive these bums out.

Yeah, but shipping is a killer there.

Shipping wasn’t bad at all last time I ordered from Micedirect, something like $40 for shipping on 900 mice. Heck, I even got an awesome incubator out of the deal too (large icechest)...hahaha Cheers, Lance

Not to mention the dry ice to play with. That stuff is awesome!

I’m the same way dude, I’m like a little kid about stuff. I told myself a million times not to buy anything soon, research and wait. I waited about 2 days, went to a pet shop just to look around at what I might want and ended up coming home with a tokay gecko and a bunch of supplies.

I actually saw the dumeril in the tank with the yellow monitor... they both seemed very very active compared to the rest of the animals at the show.. i looked back after five minutes and noticed the yellow monitor alone.. i probably saw you there

- the reason i was pretty obligated to getting those mice was because i had a free ride to the show and getting mice without a shipping seems priceless (even though i know it’s worth $30 bucks) i got as many as they had of my size knowing i probably won’t go to another show til august.. but i’m trying to find a friend to share shipping with for somewhere like rodentpro... my friend w/ the snakes should go halvsies with me.!

and it has been two days and i really want a black roughneck... but i’m pretty sure i’ll stick with the sav for now.. as a student i know i can provide for and take care of 1 monitor very well but next thing you know i’ll have 5 hungry monitors and i’ve had a habit lately of making responsible decisions (its no fun.)

You probably did see me there. I wish I had of known your were there. About an hour before I got the dumeril I held it for a long time. My arms show it too. HAHA It is rare to see a dumeril with a plump belly and thick tail. The yellow monitor was nice looking, too. I don’t like that vender becouse of allthe bad looking animals they always have, but I am such a sucker for dumerils. If it had not been a dumeril, I would have not bought anything there. They was the first monitor I ever bred.

The second show of the year is better, but it is still mostly a ball python and bearded dragon show.
