Not all temp guns are created equal

i fixed my cage (well the upper half of it anyways) changed the distance on some lights and added a small (75w) heat emitter into the cage destiny is now eating some what more vigorously (she will hunt small craw fish now if i stick em in her water tub).

lesson learned temp guns meant for cars do not seem to work as well (or at least the kragen variety) i got one of those ones off kingsnake and have been using it i for laughs used both temp guns on the same spot and got a 21 degree temp gradient the reptile one seems to be more accurate considering my Niles behavior co insides with the reptile temp gun also had a q.

i have a digital thermostat to monitor ambient air temp i need to be measuring it a couple of inch’s off the substrate correct?

Which gave the higher reading?

the shop one (one i got at a auto parts store).
if the shop was was true then destiny’s bask would of been 168.5 the one i got off kingsnake puts at at 141 she still wont use that bask for some odd reason (iv messed with the gradient 4 or 5 degrees by moving the light a bit farther from the bask itself).
the cooler one (theoretically its in the middle as the true cool side has the water tub and is 74 degrees behind the tub) and she likes to hang out under that light constantly perhaps i need to knock the wattage down on the hot bulb or drop the hide a little bit.
I’m still messing with both of them but this auto parts one seems to read things hotter then the one "designed" for reptiles.

Ian, all you need is the tempgun. Just point it different areas around the cage for readings. No need for a digital thermometer. It’s not uncommon for monitors to use basking temperatures well above 130. One of my niles regularly uses a spot that is around 155. Most of my monitors use temps of around 140.

Interesting. I wonder if anyone else has used both types to measure the same basking spot. The reason I asked which one reads hotter, is I have the auto laser gun. It also measures 160f, which I thought was kinda high, but my monitor seems to really like it! Maybe that’s because it’s not as hot as I thought. Good post!

Ian, try changing the batteries in the guns.

I got my temp gun from an auto shop too. My monitors do not stay under their lights a ton and they bask directly under it..so I have no problems.

-Reed.
Roger, did you get my PM?

No problem. Are you thinking of getting some Ornatus?

Sure, I’m thinking about it but there are certain thoughts I just don’t act on, ha ha ha. No more monitors unless they happen to hatch out right here Reed.

batterys changed still same problem I’m gonna go find a users manual online for both of these i may have to calibrate one or something (stupid little user guides don’t mention it).

destiny still doesn’t bask a whole lot though moving my former cool end light into the middle is making a better gradient that she is taking advantage of. i will see her roaming from one end of the cage to the other.

i picked up a second digital thermostat so now i got one on the hot end one on the cool end.

are your hatching’s roger big baskers?

I seem to remember reading in the proexotics temp-gun user manual that there is a way to reset it. I would imagine the other brands have a simillar mechanism.
