Does anyone here have any experience with them? How do they relate to an ackie when it comes to temperment and docile level? Dont go on a rant that monitors/reptiles are not docile and whatnot please, I know this, I was just looking for some opinions.

I have read that they are shy, is this true?

They are more skittish and peer out from hiding places vs. Ackies. I still find V. tristis to be awesome captives. If you toss in live insects and sit for a couple minutes, you will see them out and hunting daily.
One of my males is out and about very frequently and I can hand feed him.

So you would say that they are a lot more shy than ackies and not as "docile" krusty?

I don’t know that I’d say V. tristis is "a lot" more shy, but definitely somewhat more apt to run to cover. When hungry, they all seem to suddenly stay out and watch what the human is going to do. Ackies will also bolt to cover if you startle them on occasion. I think that if you have not kept monitors before, Ackies are better because they are tough and let you watch them out and about a bit more.

I actually prefer Tristis over Ackies. Both are somewhat tolerant of keeper errors and decent monitors for beginners.
