 Monitor heating baby tank

when i get my monitor i will keep it in a tank 44x24x18 and i want to know what kind of buld to use for a 130 deg basking site. i heard of using spotlights but i cant find the right kind can someone tell me what kind and brand they use. also for night i am using a ceramic heat emiteror infared and i want to know what wattage i would need because the ceramic heat emitter is about 30 and i dont want to have to go buy all sizes to see what works. what wattage basking spot will i need and what watt ceramic heater/infared will i need for night. i am building an 8x4x4 later this year but it will live in the smaller cage for now

Use a flood light not a spot light. I use 45 watt floods in my enclosures, even my 4X8X4.

Get one that looks like this

Not one that looks like this

Umm Ed, you’re pics are backwards.
Do not use the ones with the clear center.
Use the one on bottom, 45 to 60 watts.

Scott, Are you sure? I have been using the top one for years with many monitors and not had a single problem. There are some with a clear octagon in the middle that can burn them.

I did burn a peachthroat with one similar to, but not exactly like the one on the bottom.

Ed
For my Monitors I have always used the floods like in the top photo.
I even use the ones with the clear hex center, these are for overall heat not basking sites.
For basking sites I have always used the bulbs like your top photo of varring watts.
I have never used those frosted looking bulbs.
Just my 2 cents.

I would use the frosted ones before I’d use the ones with the clear center.
Now take a newbie without a temp gun and ya have a burnt lizard.
I use both types but never used the clear centers since trying one and shooting the basking spot.
I had a basking spot of (I thnk)140 and two small spots that measured, 188.

I used to use the top one before i found 2 burns on my sav. I measured 145 with temp gun and he still got burnt. I now use the bottom one and it works fine.

NEWBIES!!
PAY ATTENTION!
Use low wattage floods and get a temp gun!

Like I said the clear center spot bulbs are for heating the ambient temps in my 8’ by 3’ by 8’ enclosure!
NOT FOR A BASKING SITE.

Under this shelf are the 90watt bulbs I’m talking about.

The 2 90watt bulbs heat the lower portion of my enclosure, and provide some 95 degree belly heat which my female really likes.

Here you can see the 2 90watts supply heat to the substrate near the log on the left at 78 degrees.

I now have a log that wraps around the rim of the water basin(where my female is sitting) with a "basking spot of 95 degrees.

It also helps grow algea in the water basin...looks great!

Also, read the label on the halogen bulb packaging. Do not use the buld that says "spot," use the one that says "flood." They look almost the same so be careful.

I just went through my stock of ’GE indoor floodlight’ bulbs and found it says "Floodlight" on the front of the box, but shows a diagram of how the light is distributed and in that explanation it clearly calls them "Flood/Spot" lights! Just to add to the confusion.

I use the bottom bulbs. I have used both and they both can work. I do avoid the clean center bulbs as they can burn monitors more easily. I keep more then just monitors too so it is easier for me to just buy many of one kind rather then a bunch of different types.

I like that the incandescents (indoor flood) have a wide beam spread usually atleast 40 degrees seeing as they are non directional. The other bulb you show (outdoor flood) is directional and typicaly has a 22 degree beam spread.

This thread got interesting by people telling what works for them. I usually use 2 or 3 bulbs close together so that may be why the center of the light beam is not a lot hotter than the surrounding light. Just a thought.

I think the key is to have the enclosure set up for a at least a week before you put the monitors in. Check all areas of the basking spots for temperature differences numerous times a day. Once it is set up and tested put the monitors in.

I use the outdoor halogen floods in the first picture in light banks where the beams from multiple lights cross one another. I get a higher surface temperature with the lights further away. The heat is spread out in a less concentrated area which minimises the risk of burns. I use the indoor floods like in the second picture for basking areas with a single light for smaller lizards. The burns happen when the heat is concentrated in a small area of the monitors’ body and the monitor is trying to raise it’s whole body temp.
