I’ve seen you post before. Do you read any threads but your own? If so, you should know the answer. These posts get really old.

Leave the poor bugger alone. You’re stressing it out if it’s fighting to get away. These animals ’tame’ themselves, if you give them a chance, but you have to be patient and put it’s wellfare before you’re own wants. Have a bit of respect for the animal and it will repay you by acting naturally, instead of like a lizard that’s lost all it’s will. They can be sweet, without having to be man-handled!

I don’t get why people always want monitors to be so tame. Like I find monitors to be the best for me cause I love there personality and you Don’t have to hold them. I never hold my animals. Most I do is open cage feed or spray a bit change water and spot check and bam he’s not that scared of me. Before he would dark and now hes getting use to me poking around in his cage. Now im in the prosess to try and get him to feed off of tongs, I got him to take one yesterday but after that he wouldn’t.

Terry you asked why people always want there monitors to be tame.there are a couple of answers to that question but the one that sticks out at me is lack of understanding. We live in the utub era and so many people are putting up videos of water monitors in the pool savanna monitors in bed with them and nile monitors eating out of dog food bowls in the kitchen. With all that and most monitor books that you will find in the pet shops saying 15 minute of handling a day will help tame a monitor

So most people see this and go get themselves a monitor and expect a tame monitor like the one they saw on utub. They do not take into account as to how that tame monitor was kept or anything like that they just want a new cool pet that will make there neighbors go ohhhhhhhh

Sometimes these new keepers get lucky and find a site like this and a few others and get real information and realize that they have been misinformed

Yea but 3240 is also one of the most experienced people to post here and I am great full that he even comes here once in a while. If you work 12 hours a day and the rest is family time don’t get a monitor. You obviously want one for the wrong reasons.

Ugh. another one of these posts. Im tired of people getting on here every day and somehow it seems like they cant scroll down 2 treads to see that someone else asked the same question. I know i answered this at least 2 times this week and its only Tuesday. For the person that post this. Do you have room for a 8x4x4 cage? Do you know that its going to cost a lot to keep a monitor? Even a "tame" monitor cant be fully trusted.

Sounds like you have your hands too full to take on an animal like a monitor. If you don’t even have time to do any real research on how to care for the animal, HOW THE HECK WILL YOU BE ABLE TO FIND TIME TO ACTUALLY CARE FOR THE FRIGGIN THING???????

Maybe this really is an innocent person not a troll or you know who. Monitor people are a lot like monitors and I like this. They bite. They whip. They hisss. But hang around and don’t aggravate them a while and they become quite tractable, even friendly. Monitor people passionately love monitors and care only for their well being and that the poor helpless intelligent being does not fall into the hands of the uncaring. The fact is, most monitors brought into captivity die. That is why many keepers are not kissy kissy.

Honey, these are wild animals. They become "monitor tame’ not ’dog tame’. Please do not get defensive at the demeanor of many monitor persons. Please hang with us and read all you can find. This is a supper intelligent sensitive reptilian. Search on here, anywhere on forums on the subject of ’taming" and you will hear the pretty much the same thing mostly because it is true.

thanks for the info witch,at least someone understands,as a matter a fact i already got my monitor in its permanent home,8x4x4,lots of hiding spots and stuff to climb, water bowls everywhere,a waterfall,u name it my monitor has it made dude.family time includes my animals,my snakes and my monitors are my children as well.and my wife and kids help daddy out too by handling and cleaning, they also love my animals.ive been keeping reptiles since i was a kid,ive always LOOOOOOOOOOOVED them so much.
and ive never had one pass on me at a young age, except for my very first which i only had 5 years, and the other one i bought at a flea market for 30 bux and it lasted about two weeks, only reason why i bought it is because for like 2 or 3 weeks straight i saw the poor lil guy in a almost air tight box and it looked like a skeleton,i tried my best to give it a chance at life but the lil baby redtail just was for too gone, and that guy was reported to the humane society and was shut down,u should have seen the way he kept his animals, disgusts me.oh and how i wish i could have the time to sit on my a*s and scroll through threads all day and read but someone has to feed my family and pay bills,12 hours is mandatory, should i add the overtime i put in being the foreman of the rig,ha,try around 90 hours or more per week buddy and i still find time to love my animals

And then what?
Find a forum where they’ll tell you same thing that is being said now and blow them off the same way you did here? Or find a group of people that agree with you and kill the poor thing.
Either way, if you keep doing what you’re doing that sav will never live to it’s full potential.
Don’t get offensive, just listen and do. You and your sav will have better experiences with each other if you do.

Every forum is the same with the exception of a few that tell you to house it in a glass tank with aspen, a 90* basking temp, and that it will only get about 18" and love being handled

I like being social, but this is a forum for information first. Alot of people come on here and ask questions and when they dont get the answers they like, they get mad and start crying. If someone is too busy to do a bit of research, why would anyone want to play nice? Most people that know what they are talking about, are here to help the monitors thrive. I have had a few good conversations with the socalled meanies on this forum. It take respect, to get respect. I learned that you have to take the time to do ALOT of reading, listening, and watching your critter to make it all work to make him/her thrive. If it wasnt for the socalled "jerks" on this forum, my monitor would be dead by now. I just want to take a minute to thank all you "jerks" for taking the time and putting up with a newbie like me. You guys are awesome!

Erin that was very well said, the so called jerks are also the ones who know what they are talking about. If it wasn’t for them I would probably still have a half dead and dehydrated Nile living in a fish tank eating ground turkey and cat food

Haha no thats what YouTube is for! have you looked at the videos lately? Most people on there have the wrong husbandry and incorrect expectations of there monitors. Mostly everyone just on youtube has the pet store package. Imagine what the rest of the world

I can not stand youtube for that very reason. If you watch those videos it is horrible, they all think they are the reptile whisper giving advice on how they can tame any monitor and half the time these animals are kept in sub par conditions no room to move and very little heat. And every teen aged kid see this and thinks its awesome run out and buy a monitor and wonder why it dies on them inside of a month. And those that do survive come here and ask for advice and when you tell them something they don’t want to here they get mad and tell you you do not know what you are talking about

Sorry to go on a tirade but youtube really pisses me off

So you get a choice if you are new. You Tube persons touting LETHAL husbadry, this place and others where anyone not giving the expected conditiond responses with groveling is instantly attacked, the English Tea Parties, or you can hang with scientists who have only studied science and not much else and have become, um, one dementional individuals.

But yeah, niiice, you can choose who you listen to. If you’re not able to take the crap from the jerks and bullies, don’t read the posts, or at least let it in one eye and out the other. Some of us ’non conformists’ actually do survive and raise outstanding monitors, but you have to use your initiative! Don’t get sucked into following the crowd and not being able to think for yourself! But then you might have to do some of your own research (or lurk the forum:)
