 BOSC WONT EAT!!

hi, i have been given a bosc/sav monitor from a guy at my college who said it was far to aggressive. i though that sounds like fun. so i took him up on the offer.. im a sucker of a lizard in need of a home with an attitude.

anyway when i got the little guy (its under 2ft long) the only thing i had to put him in was an old fish tank (i know bad bad bad) it was set up very make shift - 5" of soil, cork bark hides, spot light and water bowl. basically not goood.

i started building him a new viv but due to me not having a great deal of time or money at that time production was very slow. its now finnished pretty much. he’s going into the new viv today.

its L shaped, one bit is 5ft by 3ft by 4ft high with two foot of digging space, the other bit of the L is 5ft by 2ft by 3ft high. its not massive but will do for now.

anyway my major concern atm is the bosc.... he wont eat properly. he has been in the crappy tank for about 2 months now (i know very bad but had nothing else) during which time is has been eating fine, up until the last 3 weeks, hes been eating less and less. at the start he would eat 2 mice, a box of large locusts - 30? but now he wont touch the mice. iv tried leaving them over night and tweezering them to make them look alive. he just closes his eyes... well worrying.
he still munches down locusts like there is no tomorrow but he seems to have lost a lot of fat stores, mostly around the base of the tail. still has fat tummy on him.

i also tried some high quality dog food - apparently some monitors love it buti ts high in fat - i just wanted to try n fatten him up a bit. he ate a small amount but that was it.

im thinking take him to a vet, but there are literally no herp vets in my area - the one i usualyl use is a bit experienced in reptiles, usually i tell him whats wrong and he sorts out treatment. he sorted my carpet python out when i bought her with a respiratory infect.
but i dunno what he could do to help.

anyway hopfully moving him into the new viv will help? would that help kick start his appetite?
thanks.

All you have told us is that you have a monitor and it doesnt eat. You gave no use full info that could help us answer "WHY?". You should post pics of its set up and add details of your husbandry. My money is on bad temps.

My money’s on temps as well, combined with the stress of a new enclosure. Like asked before post setup pics and husbandry info, ambient temps(cold and hot side),basking surface temps, humidity levels, etc.

Stay away from the dog food, hes eating the locus.Everyone is right, with out knowing what your temps and humidity ranges are,its kind of hard to help you.A healthy savanna should eagerly take mice or anything else you offer,so my guess is something is off in you husbandry.Post some pictures of your set up or give a detailed description of you ambient temps, basking temps and so on.
