Monitor fans should have a look at NOVA on October 20th, there’s a really good documentary on monitor intelligence called "The Lizard Kings". Several people who post here have helped with it, so the information is solid. Lots of spectacular footage, and there’s a nice focus on Eric Pianka studying monitors in Western Australia. One of the things it presents is the first-ever "lizard eyes view" of monitors going about their business of being clever.

I was an adviser for the project, and even have a photo to share:

It’s the almighty perenti , looking like it might have a little trouble chasing it’s prey into a tight crevice , or burrow (assuming they do that?) Would it not cramp it’s style?

Look forward to seeing the documentary anyway.

NOVA is not a channel. It’s a TV show series just like "How I met your mother" only it isn’t mindless BS. The channel is PBS (Public Broadcasting Service).

Does anyone know how Eric lost his finger?
Watching him holding those little monitors while taking measurements etc’ was like it was second nature to him.
I thought it was interesting how water monitors breed. Never knew they mated with several males at a time like that! I wonder if ’all’ monitors do that.

Not all monitors, but certainly a lot of the larger ones. It’s been well observed in lace monitors, where several males will gather around a receptive female and battle it out for mating rights. Usually it’s the female that chooses which male she mates with in the end. That’s probably the case in most species of monitor in which males are significantly larger than females.
