 How hot is too hot?

I use a 65 watt halogen. It gives me a hot side temp of low 90s a cool side temp of mid 70s and a basking temp of 115-150 ( there’s a large rock under the light. Depending on how high he climbs it gets hotter.) I imagine when he is at the top of the rock, being a little closer to the light, his back must get close to or over 160.

I could switch to 2 45 watts but I’m not sure whats best. He does use the top of the rock at least a few times a week. So like I said How hot is too hot?

If hes using it to bask its not too hot. If you see him go back for a few minutes then move then you know its too hot. Your monitor will tell you.

If the air temp goes over 100 it’s getting to hot. I have photos somewhere, of a basking spot of mine that was over 200F and had an albig use it for months before I caught the temp that high. I did lower it, just because I thought that was a little excessive.

Cheers,
Chad

If they avoid the center of the light on the bask and are constantly picking their feet up to keep from burning, you’re too hot. If they sit under the bask for over an hour and constantly throughout the day, it’s probably a low. Check the numbers with a temp gun and you’ll see that you want 120-140*F (adults, go a touch cooler on babies) or so usually, but air temps on the cool end need to be under 87*F or so or you’ll cook your critter.

If they’re giving them such high basking spots, don’t you think the cool end should be more around 75f to be on the safe side? I know you said ’under’ 87 but 86 is under and I don’t think that’s cool enough to give a good gradient:)

sdslancs has a good point. It’s not blazing hot every day of the year in their natural habitat. Monitors will often seek cooler temps on a hot day after basking or to rest. Not unusual to see 75-80F days with 60% humidity. So I agree that they should have access to a cool side of around 75F.

Cool end in my ackie cage is 92degs during summer. They can get lower temps in their burrows.

yep and I noticed mine are less inclined to burrow unless they do have high temps.

If 87 is too hot they can always go down if their burrow, they use them to thermo-regulate their body temperature. Just like a Beardie gapes his mouth and can use the fat in his body to thermo-regulate. The dirt isn’t going to be 87, not down in the burrow. :-)

Honestly, look at the proper way to cage monitors (75-95*F air temps, 110-120*F basking surface temps, 60% humidity or so

 How hot is too hot?

Why is it some people "get it" and some people simply don’t? My remedial point was that if you have a "cool" end approaching 87*F, you are getting dangerously hot for a young Monitor. So I tossed out a realistic example of what happens in a "20 gallon long" if you place a 100W bulb on a screen - you get 160*F basking and near-90*F "cool" side or so (hence me chucking out the 87*F cool side comment) - the post asks "How hot is too hot?". Yes, you should have substrate with some depth....yes, when the cage gets really hot they burrow down and sometimes even block the entrance to stay cool and moist. No, people don’t dig a hole down to the bottom of the dirt and measure the cool side from there .... they usually have stick-on thermometers or probe therms on the sides of the tank or whatever cage is being used. Yes, about 75*F is a good cool side temp to shoot for. Blah, blah, blah, blah...... Next nit-pick point someone makes is that screen top cages are no good. Yeah, they suck. There’s no humidity retention and they are unefficient. But people still are using them and reading here, so I tossed out another example/scenario that is common. Do we get it now, Susan?

 How hot is too hot?

OP, Please don’t be offended, just wanted to ask a quick question without making a whole new thread,

Is 127 degrees a good basking temperature for my 7-8 month old Sav? Iknow cooler for juvies but is that too cool? And please just one good answer so that it doesn’t fill this post with off topic stuff. Thanks. :-)

Yes, that’s fine. They will efficiently digest and get up to temperature with that basking temp.
