Pretty good breakthrough. Im starting to enjoy and appreciate him more now. Sorry for poor sucky vid of him just at the window, but thats been our routine from the get go. Occasionally, I can lure him out with food, but now when he does that to the glass, I’m able to take advantage of the moment and see how far I can actually go with this interaction stuff. In front of the window is where he is ’cool’, but anywhere else in the room,he’ll be non tractable. Hopefully today wasn’t just one of his good days.

Spectacular melinus! If you just put a plank from his cage to the window sill, he’ll be able to get where he wants to go to bask in the sunshine!

That’s a very good start to interaction. If you keep doing that and not let it get into a situation that freaks it out it’ll want to spend more and more time exploring the room and will gradually gain more and more trust.

That’s what I eventaully want out of him, to be able to let him explore the room. Truthfully, once I relax on him a bit, he goes to a dark corner(bed of desk) and hides. I haven’t got the courage to just let him ’be’ in the room.

That is a great video. I cringe at the thought of those claws on bare skin, though. It will be nice to see a similar video when it has grown to adulthood.

It’s kind of hard to see in the pic, but the there is a slight irratation on my skin after he walks on my arms. This used to be ’cool’ but now my skin is healing much slower. The hives came and went away after about an hour or so. I need a new pair of gloves.

Wow, great progress!

He is around the same size as mine but i’m lucky if i see my one 3 times a week lol! Whats your secret!!

If you dont mind me asking, what size cage is he in? And what is your substrate?

Reason i ask is that i put mine in a big cage whilst it was too small so i never really got to interact with him.

Great work again,
-Daryl

The cage is bare minimum pretty much 4x2x4. It’s messy and really made around so he is comfortable. I’m currently building the larger cage, but this one I’ll really take time on doing to fit his needs all the way around. He will hang upside for hours if he had the chance...I’m stealing ideas from photos GT posted a long time ago on mangroves. In the photos, they seemed to like hanging out in a matrix of thin branches.

The bedding consist of 70/30 top soil x play sand. Every couple of inches added, I layed down a bunch of pencil thick twigs, then added soil on top, it really helps with the burrows. I use leaf litter of a few types, w/e I plan to take home from gardening.

May I ask if you’ve ever gotten the monitor to go trigger happy for food, take off tongs, etc.?

Sounds great,

Have you got a link for them photos at all?

I am going to re-design my cage as it looks good but not really beneficial to him.

I have only gotten him to hand feed once, have you been able to feed off tongs etc.?
Usually, he will come out for a hour or 2 max at around 12pm (so i only see him on weekends) then when he is out, i walk in the room and he goes completely still, then, i go out and literally 5 seconds later i will go in again and he is gone and i will not see him for the rest of that day! Kinda sucks!

I am thinking of splitting his 8x4x6 in half into a 4x4x6, just so he can get used to me more?

Did you do anything imperticular to make him so... how he is!?

Im sorry if it looks like im hijacking your thread but i thought it was relevant - if i am, let me know and ill PM you!

Cheers
-Daryl

You’re not hijacking at all, still on the subject of interactions with difficult lizards.

I will PM you those photos. It’s not hard to picture, just google the images of jungles and mangrove forest. Make your entire cage useful and wait for your monitor to grow and the 8 ft cage will seem more used up later on. Use up you wall space that its able to climb and hang vertically or even allow for hanging upsidedown. They love to get into things, scaling stuff is something they do best. I use things like bend a vine and thin twigs to make him feel really comfortable. Do what you think needs to be done, cut it down in size if you want. Aim for a jungle gym type cage.

This was his cage after the quarantine cage. You see its heavily decked out where if I looked close enough can see him. He obviously knows I’m there but feels comfortable behind the bamboo. It gets him to stick around. I picked that up from herping...animals usually depend on their surroundings to blend in first before having to use action.

On your approach, I would recommend you stick around when you catch him out. Don’t throw a party, but you sitting there and hanging out isnt breaking any boundaries and should be fair game. Try not to make a ton of eye contact and mouth movements.

Here is were my melinus plays the jerk card agian. He is scared of tongs, and will sometimes eat from my finger tips in the cage. If he is basking or in his dark area, I’ll hang food in front of the glass and he will come to lick at the glass for a smell, but once I open the door..its like I hurt his feelings or something. He has handfed more often on the window sill then in the cage.

I feed him shrimp. It’s his favorite, but I don’t think its anything imperticular. It’s funny because I’ve broken boundaries before by grabbing him and held him still to look at a burn under his palm. His introduction to natural uvb wasn’t so great either.

Think of what can be causing him to stay scared...small animals running around, near an entertainment center?

Your monitors 2 hour outings are actually normal. The articles of melinus that were done by John A and Markb states that their outings are about 45 minutes to 2 hours in the wild. Mines out throughout the hot part of the day now noon to 4 ish.

Thanks for getting back!

I might have to nick the bamboo idea, seems to work well! I was trying to find something to use so he could climb the walls but it was difficult to find something big to cover the whole back wall, it will be possible when i size it down.

Mine was also petrified of tongs, he had no qualms about my hand being in the cage but as soon as he saw the tongs, he was off!!! Also, my cat does go in there sometimes, but he does not seem to bothered by her! Ive tried to kick her out but she always sneaks in somehow!

It good that the 2 hours are normal but still kind of sucks!

When i go in there and he is out, i take a seat and he just stays still for around 10 mins then goes to bask, he always seems nervy but i suppose that is some progress!? Its hard to make that sort of contact (through glass) as he is rarely out, its hard to find when to start.

Did you do anything special with your Melinus to make him so alert and want to come out at all?

Here is a cage pic, i will cut it in half and add more branches etc.

Thanks again and sorry if im going off course!
Cheers
-Daryl

P.S i know what you mean by hanging! He loves it up there!

Those are some cool pics. Apply some lattice or something that it can scale to the back wall, even screwing in 1x1 stakes into the back wall at random places will help him saticfy some climbing needs.. You have enough room to even make a couple shelves on the back/right portion of the cage. Do you see where he is climbing in the photos, try to hang something there too. LAttice comes in a few different sizes and forms. Using materials that arent too wide but still very climbable help save a bunch of room. A lot of your branches are laid down, try one that it can scale up vertically and hang there. Try having a place where he can be high up but you cant see him at all!

I think my melinus does that to the glass because he is bored. On the window sill, I don’t know why he acts like that there.

Stripper or rockstar for holloween guys?

Yeah, i did have some lattice but i never really got round to adding it, it will fit perfectly in the halved cage so i will put it in then.

I have some vertical poles but not many, i will have a trip to the forest and get some smaller ones so i can put them upright thanks! I light the idea about the high up hiding spot, i saw one like it in your vid in the top right corner?

I meant have you done anything to make him want to come out and explore? Sorry i didn’t make myself clear!

Thanks a lot for all your help!
Cheers

No, he does that to the glass for about 30 minutes a day or so...I don’t know. Sometimes he will be cool and stand there, sometimes he’ll run down. I’ve gotten him to follow shrimp a couple times but thats it. I think the fact that he doesn’t understand glass to well he thinks he can just crawl his way for what ever he sees in front of him.
