 New question, need help please

As you know recently I added more sand and hides to tudes cage, He’s been spending alot of time in his hut, in fact I think it might be to much time, you see, I have a hide on the cool side and a hide on the warm side, the warm side has an UTH to keep temps regular and tude isn’t leaving hit hise to bask, should I move the hide off of the heating pad or just leave it the way it is?

A mixture of being a scared lizard and wanting to recoop keep it in its burrow. I also think he is spending much time in there because there is a heat source there. Not the best reliable heat for making ’A plus’ monitors, but they’ll recognize that it’s a warm spot.

If you have a temp gun, and guages, go through areas of the soil where he likes to be and measure them. MDF has great examples of this on his youtubes when he measure the temperature of the soil dept. I don’t know what your temps are but you should have burrows and soil temps above 70-75,having options is the best. Try removing that heat pad for now and use strickly heat coming from above, maybe that will draw ’tude’ out to bask.

Remove the heat pad thats garbage. Let him be. No baby monitor wants to be hovered over by a 5’ preditor. My guess is your playing with him too much and changing stuff around way too much. YOu need to let him be. If you keep doing this your going to stress your monitor out and its going to die.

Also do what Khai mentioned.

Just imaging looking out your window & seeing a 50 foot giant ripping your back yard up, when would you go out again! make sure your temps are right & give him/her time to settle back down. They all respond different to change some thrive on it & some sulk for a good few days.

Sulfurboy1o3 & BansheeRacer25 have given you some good experience advice take it on board.

Good luck.

 New question, need help please

I don’t even hold tude, I believe I mentioned that......SO the playing with and holding is all wrong sorry
: (, I haven’t touched tude or moved anything around inside the cage for about 2 weeks now, so thats wrong as well, I will remove the heating pad since that was recomended. I figured tude was staying in there because it was warm, what the sense in leaving my comfort zone if it hot in here and my food comes to me. It’s like not wanting to leave your nice warm bed when you have people bringing you breakfast in bed.

I aked about the heating pad, not to guess if I was handling him to much or moving stuff around, if I wanted advice on that I would have asked thank you, I don’t handle him I know baby monitors don’t like to be messed with and I keep everything where it is, I added more substrate thats the only change I have made and that was about two weeks ago, that and I added a new hide, which BTW is the one he stays in. It’s new.

Evan by adding more dirt and an a new hide, you have made some changes to his new world.Just give him some time to feel more secure.I would also remove the heat pad, they are crap.

Listen to the advice given above, they know what they are talking about.Try not to get defensive when you ask for advice because people will stop helping you.

I’m just saying, don’t assume I’m doing something ask if I’m doing it. You should know thats going to make someone mad, it’s not critisism is starting stuff. I’m taking the advise, I’m just letting you know I didn’t do what you are just assuming I did, if I were to assume that one of the dogs that came in my clinic had parvo therefore just trating him for parvo when in fact he had distemper, there would be a serious problem, have a little more fact then asumption next time and maybe you’ll produce the goods.

Were all just trying to help you, nothing more, a young healthy sav can spend most of his time hiding at a the younger age, which can be very frustrating when your worried about his health & well been. We tend to like the sav as pet because they can cope with alot of crap before they start to show it, their robust & built to survive so stop worrying make sure your temps are right & build your trust with him/her over the coming weeks.

Good Luck!

 New question, need help please

I know you are trying to help, I appreciate the help, could use all the help I can get. I was just saying that BansheeRacer25 should ask before he/she asumes. I just want my monitor to come out and bask like he hasn’t done in two weeks, I haven’t touched anything or moved anything, haven’t even looked under the hut for two weeks. I want to raise the basking temps a little, I was wondering what kind of bulb I should use, I already have a mercury vapor bulb, do I need to use another one of those or can I use a cheaper bulb?

That depends on your temps, do you have a temp gun? Instead of asking all these questions which have been asked and answered a thousand times on this board, do a simple search and find your answers. I know for a fact you can find the answer to your question by doing just that.

I got mine at Home Depot but paid much more for it than I would have paid if I ordered online. But I also got a higher quality temp gun than what I would have gotten online so it worked out. I paid $50. It’s got some useful features.

So, let me get this straight.....you ask for advise, people on this site are nice enough to give you "Good" advise and all you can do is complain about them giving you "more" advise than you asked for! WOW, talk about ungrateful!!! A "thanks" for caring about your reptile’s well being would have probably been good!!! I’m not even going to bother with my two cents. Besides, EVERYTHING the other two guys said was DEAD ON!

For one, I welcome extra info and help but.....

Quote:

My guess is your playing with him too much

Don’t guess, know the facts, true I changed his world a little but I don’t handle or play with him, so you shouldn’t just assume that I am, BansheeRacer25 could have just as easily asked are you handling your monitor rather then assuming I was because it was wrong.

Tude is out basking now, I added another heating lamp, thats all that took.

I ordered it off line because my aunt works at the pet store, which means I have access to the retail website and get everything 50% cheaper.

Yes I was, as previously stated, I have access to the pet stores retail website, which gives me access to alot more then you’ll find in the pet stores and at home depote.

Pics coming soon.

I am sorry but I don’t remember what kind of cage do you have for you monitor? The truth with Savannah monitors is that most, and when I say most I mean most of them die in captivity. You need to listen to these people if you don’t do the things they say you do or not. It’s all use full info. If I had anything to do with it I would stop the import trade for all monitors and allow only true CBB monitor to be sold.

 New question, need help please

Right now I have a 20 long, at the end of this week I will have a 12x5x5 cage built by a reptile cage specialist that I designed myself, I’m paying $600 dollars to have this cage built. I am listening, don’t know why everyone keeps saying

Quote:

You need to listen to these people

If I wasn’t I wouldn’t have the basking temps where they need to be, I wouldn’t have the air temp where it needed to be, I wouldn’t have a sand/dirt mixture even though it goes against my better instinct because I’ve seen impaction first hand and it’s not pretty, I wouldn’t have taken the heating pad out from under the tank, I wouldn’t have more then one hide in the tank. Stop saying I need to listen, because I am. K. Thats all I have to say on that subject.

 New question, need help please

I’ve seen impaction cases too, but they were from the result of animals in dry cages. Leos and baby beardies esp. It’s a mixture of things along with low surface temps and such. But if sand and soil was the case/cause of impaction, lizards in the wild would be all dead.
Same thing with parasites, if parasites were the case..lizards wouldnt exist. Proper conditions call for curing and preventing it all or atleast keeping them at bay. I hope you’ll catch onto what, how, why things get impacted because you have an animal with a head built to dig and toss soil like crazy.

Not saying that a 12x5x5 cage isn’t cool, but a cage a little smaller to raise the animal up in might be better. Would help you with socializing with the lizard.

Really?? How can you read my attitude through my typing? I haven’t a cocky attitude, I’m saying that you shouldn’t just assume that people are doing things but ask if they are. I’m not going to lie, I honestly have no reason to.... I’m asking for advise to keep my monitor happy and healthy not because I just thought it would be cool to know. I had no problem with your response other then the assuming I was handling my monitor when I wasn’t. Like I said before thats like someone bringing in an animal to my clinic and me just assuming it’s something before I get the facts.....

Thanks for the tip on building a smaller cage, I just see posted all over here that the bigger you build the better, I’ll take the social aspect into consideration. I appreciate you bringing that up to me, i really do. I see that tude loves to digg and shovle his little head around in the dirt and that it makes him happy, thats why I went ahead and did it even though I was scared of impaction. Maybe thats something I need to study when I enter my exotics class.
