Black Throat Monitor. No clue on age, and still a little small on sexing, but I’d go with male.

Cheers,
Chad

Cheers Chad that’s what i thought, not bad as i was told it’s a white throat even gave me the Latin name!!

Those photo’s are 30/40mins after i brought him/her home very bad stuck shed, the tail end would of been dead another month or so, large ring of stuck shed 3" from end of tail, I’ve cleared it now. & in one of the bath pictures you can see an abrasion of some kind midway down his tail, it looks clean & I’ve put some cream on it to help it heal.

My understanding is all V. albigularis are technically "Whitethroat" monitors and the term "Blackthroat" was coined for marketing distinctions.

Yours looks like V.a.ionidesi, which is commonly called Blackthroat.

Any corrections welcome,
Jesse

Thank you Jesse, I’ll start studying!!

It’s a shame that beautiful pattern is hid under all that stuck old shed, anyway his toes & tail tips are all clear now.

MDF,

Yes, definitely albigularis ionidesi. All Albigs are technically whitethroats as Jesse pointed out.

Where did you take him in from? I’d say he’s under 2yrs for sure - beyond that it would be very hard to tell. Do you have any idea how he was being kept before you brought him in? Stuck shed says husbandry wasn’t perfect. You going to keep him for good or just caring for him temp?

=)

Hi MDF , yep most certainly a "blackthroat" as in the question asked and also as already pointed out they are all technically w/t’s , age wise i would hazard a guess going on my younger ones and say in the region of 8 months to 12 months approx , very very nice monitors and as you know one of the larger species.

varanus_odom

He came from a pet shop down the road from me, he was kept in a typical pet shop set up, about 3x2 witha pelleted substrate if i remember right. And I’ve always wanted one so i would think so, thanks for your input.

Steve

Thanks Steve for your input & yes i was told about 12 months old so that ties in, is he/she small for their size? i would say he/she is about 30" long, I heard Jesse mention that his was around 4 foot at a year & a half & over the last 6 months it’s put on another 20" in length.

Going by that data & allowing for the fact it’s a male i could end up with a monster!!
