Tell me what you think of these care video’s someone recommended I watch

Hi ,
while at first glance it might look impressive that this person has such a huge and tame/apparently tame savannah monitor i,ve looked at his vids and can honestly say that the standard of care he his providing for that reptile has killed many savs over the years .I,m not talking a few or hundreds but many , many thousands .Thats thousands yr after yr after yr ,and its only in recent yrs that sav care has been better understood and the survival rate seems to be rising quite dramatically ie a lot less "help dying sav "posts on reptile forums .Follow the advice that longtime keepers on this forum pass on and you should have relatively trouble free sav care for many years but any attempt to "tweak" that care or cut corners will be counter productive and cause problems .

I think that guys pushing his luck and his sav will pay for that eventually ,and remember that occassionally savs kept in extremely poor conditions can sometimes "live" 6 to 10 yrs but for much of that lifetime they will be very slowly dying .

At present erm"Yoshi" (at least the guys original ) is being kept at temps and humidity levels that eventually (often rapidly) lead to serious and irreversible health problems that again kill thousands of savs every year.

Back in the early nineties it was reccomended to provide savs with basking temps 90f -100f and kept on a thin layer of drysand or newspaper , crushed walnut shells etc , so 0% humidity and savs though reccomended as extremely easy to care for were very hard to keep alive and healthy for any length of time-3 to 5 yrs max usually,

cheers, and best of look with yours,
Andy

I wasn’t planning on doing as they said, I just thought I’d show you guys what other people are suggesting people to watch and learn. I was research savannah monitors a little more and came across an answer on yahoo answers advising someone to watch these videos that they are the best examples of monitor husbandry. I thought it was wrong so I decided to see what everyone here thought.

That site is terrible. If has a section showing how to tame monitors. I’ve seen his youtube video’s. He keeps his monitors in a 40 gallon breeder, with news paper as subtrate. A half log and a water dish. His cages are boring and very out of date. it also has a screen top. I’ve argued with him trying to show him what he’s foing wrong. Your kinda starting to sound like DWS cause you like all these wrong sites and bad video’s. Not to mention all of his pictures are stolen from Justin and Shay.

Sorry I read the credit section and he didn’t steal them. But he uses what he call’s the pet store package for his monitor.

Yes, I did read it. His info is correct but he doesn’t follow any of the thing’s that he reconmends. All of his info are from other’s, not him. He keep’s his sav’s like the pet store package deal he shows. He also reconmended it if I remember correctly on youtube.

No he says that putting your savannah in the pet store package is the main reason savannahs are dying off so early in age, read it, don’t just look at the pictures.

Quote:

The main husbandry error and number one Savannah Monitor killer is the "pet store package", the fish aquarium with a screen top, newspaper substrate, and a 100 watt heat lamp. As monitors need high humidity, this is a great way to cause dehydration, impaired metabolic function, and lethargy. This leads to obesity, and possibly liver disease, and finally death.

Those are the sites exact words. Who cares where the information came from, it’s that the information is good information. When someone writes a research paper, it’s not the writters words that make the paper, it’s the research the found and other peoples words. I found that alot of the things that are mentioned on this site are listed on this site.

Mx, If you are referring to the youtube link in the credits, that’s just where he got the screen shot for the "pet store package".

LizaB2008, that website is pretty reliable as far as the information available.

Ah the youthful vigor of a teen, always ready to fight. Mx, just ignore comments like: "did you finish kindergarten?" If you ruffle your feathers over things like that, you got much bigger problems ahead. Trust me, there are much worse problems in life than an insult, try losing your job and not knowing if you can feed your family tomorrow, I’m not in that position but many are. You cant let yourself get flustered over simple insults like that or you will not be a happy camper making through the rest of life. Just ignore and move on, the last thing the rest of us want is to see another fight go on, that’s how forums like this get ruined. Thank you for the co-operation, it helps keep things peaceful and informational. :-)

Lol wise words, Obi Wan. Mx you obviously didn’t read the site or have no reading comprehansion skills because the site was straight dissin the 40 gallon tank and sayin its the bad part of pet keeping. Hooked on phonics, homey.

Two guidelines to reduce the childish bickering.

1. only post a response when needed.

2. Don’t respond to insulting or argument enticing posts.

It’s that simple kids.
