Try starting off with dwarf monitors. Out of the choices you picked, the bt might end up being an animal not so afriad of humans. They just require a ton of room and grow to about 4 ft their first year or so. If you want to go with another good captive , argus might be another one to look up, they too require a good amount of room.

room isn’t an issue it’s just the choice is hard Black throats i like a lot because they get large but not water monitor large. Blackthroat’s are built like tank’s from what ive read about them but their temperment is not as bad as some that ive looked at. The nile was the first one i crossed off the list

Actually if you look thorugh the post theres guy here that posted pics of his friends 7’11 black throat monitors, 1 inch off of 8 feet long and 66 lbs. But the black throat does seem like the better choice out of those.

That’s what I wanted to know i know they grow quickly as most monitors do but i want a impressive lizard. I feel kinda sorry about saying negative thing’s about the Nile they are just what they are nothing is wrong with that even if they are more on the aggessive side but they live with nile croc’s so you gotta be tough for that and aggessive.

Large size doesn’t bother me ive seen bites from several monitor’s on the web and i gotta say the croc monitor has the worst bite ive ever seen from a monitor. I respect these animal’s i don’t think a tame monitor exists one that tolerates yes but tame no.

You seem like you know what your getting yourself into. research reasearch research. Take some time and make sure its what you want. You know how big they all get. There are some good vidoes made by people on this site that show you how to interact with your monitor. MDF, Sidbarvin, and Crocdoc have good videos. You cant expect your monitor to be docile right off the bat. Ask SIDVARVIN, it took him over a year for his niles to tolerate him.

I have been doing reshearch for about give or take a year now since last november basicly to me all monitor’s are intresting. Ornates intrest but i have very little info on them ive read a book on niles but it was before it became it’s on species.I know there is a lot of confusion between the Orante Monitor and the Nile Monitor. It’s just hard to find good good info on them or the blackthroat monitor ive been reading the posts here for a while. So I figured who better to ask about my monitor choice as i don’t want to be uneducated about them.

Yes, some monitors will take alone time to talerate you. I think I remember Chris saying that it take over a year for his monitor to start to trust him, and now the trust is good between them. And he has a rudi witch can be a difficult species.

Large size doesn’t bother me but im getting a baby of course Niles ive noticed in all the reading ive done they get a bad rep because they are more nervous. Blackthroat’s are more then likely will be one i will get but i gotta say they aren’t the largest monitor ive seen. But they are large i gotta say those pic’s i was told to look at where very impressive.

You’re right, blackthroats do seem to come in many various sizes and Snakeball’s BT is so far, the biggest monster I’ve seen. Some stay around the 4ft mark, but ionidesi, as snakeball’s and mine are, do tend to get bigger.
As far as interacting with them goes, I only have a couple of years with them but have found them to be very rewarding, trusting and very inquisitive. In other words, I def would not consider them a display animal. They want to interact and sometimes get in your face!
Also, it doesn’t take them long to trust, if you don’t handle them when small, but just use tongs to feed them. They soon lose their fear of you and pretty soon, they’re handling you!
If you have the space (at least a room size enclosure) and the time to devote to one, you may be surprised how massive they can get in a short time.
I get the ’big monitor’ thing. If that’s what floats your boat, go for it. I’m quite happy with the size my BT is, but I don’t think he’s finished growing yet.

Glad to hear your wanting take up monitor keeping, but as people are explaining to you be prepared for a big feeding & elec bill & a 6 foot plus monitor that might not like you for the rest of it’s life.
I went from tegu to sav & waited 4/5 years till i eventually got my hands on a B/T monitor, other than that good luck!!

My columbian tegu Rex isn’t that fond of me still and ive had him a year and he’s grown like crazy. I think this tame idea is unrealistic but tolerable i think is more realistic
