Obviously the closer the two subspecies are geographically, some blend may occur. This would be the straits separating Sumatra and Java. Funny thing about the islands in the straits, Krakatoa and others a trend to become melanistic occurs. There hasn’t been any studies comparing the two subspecies on those islands so I can only speculate what blending occurs.

The characteristics that define bivittatus are in comparing the skull to macromaculatus and tail length. Overall, bivittatus has a short tail and a more massive skull with short snout. Scales are shaped different on the necks of both subspecies. Overall they are very closely related lizards. Pattern wise the Javan bivittatus has a broad shoulder band and the band behind it is reduced and broken up. A similar pattern occurs in Thailand’s macromaculatus so its not a feature exclusive to bivittatus.

Mainland Asia’s macromaculatus is recorded larger than bivittatus. Malay peninsula Cameron Highlands are recorded close to 10 feet. Thankfully the real giants are not legally imported. The bivittatus from Java and the Sumatran macromaculatus are usually too big for most folks captive conditions anyway.

Its macromaculatus, either Sumatra or southern Kalimantan. There are no mainland S.E. Asian countries exporting water monitors, only Indonesia exports and supplies the pet trade. That counts Malaysia out.

If it was purchased in the U.S., its a baby V.s. bivittatus. The pattern is Javan.

Hhaahaha Are you trying to trick me? It fits if its a Chinese macromaculatus. The broken band behind the shoulder band is not restricted to Javan bivittatus... Thailand, Myanmar also have this feature. Where in China was it caught? I travel southern China 4 times a year- Guangzhou, Dongguan, Putian, Shenzhen...

Xie xie,

John
