 Bit of an update!

Hey,

Have not really kept you guys posted recently so i thought it was about time for an update.

Indiana my Melinus is still going strong, eating like a dust bin but he has now got some serious muscle around his legs, neck and tail, he must be on the 2ft mark by now. Kinda crappy pics but you have to be quick with him before he scurries off and hides, also, the only time i can get him is when he is basking so the lighting is pretty awful as well!

This one makes him look kind of creepy but he actually looks really nice in person!

And the two new guys, Kenan and Kel, are also doing great. They are so fun to watch as they are just so energetic! Also, the coloration is so different! Kel, the lighter one (one the right) is the presumed girl and his colour is amazingly vibrant compared to the other but they are from the same clutch.

Im not sure if this is normal with Ackies but they are so inquisitive, i put my hand in and they climb right up it. Its awesome!!

I have one question that i hope you dont mind answering. In the Ackie cage, the substrate (dirt x sand mix) is getting quite dry and therefore not holding the best of burrows - this also means its quite low humidity- i can only see them go into one which is behind a log and they made that when they first got in the cage, but other than right next to the water bowl and under certain logs it just collapses. I have some leaf litter in but i intend to get more and spray every night but it is quite unsuccessful... any ideas?

Thanks for looking,
Cheers
-Daryl

Re: humidity -- if you have a screen top with hot basking lights on top, you will find yourself wetting down the substrate every few days. If the cage is essentially sealed up, the moisture stays trapped as humidity (which is better).

Ackies are totally curious and bold. That’s part of the reason they are so popularly kept and bred. A great species to keep!!!!

 Bit of an update!

Thanks for the comments Steve and Justin, i agree with the Ackies, great little characters!! Ill try to post more of the Melinus, just got to catch him when he is out!!

Also, cheers for the humidity help - i had a bit of screen where the light was so i could just put the light on top of it, that left a inch of screen around the light as i measured it wrong! But have now covered that up with foil, gave the cage a good spray and churned around the substrate and it seems to be working great... Cheers!!

Thanks again,
Daryl
