 Rat pinkey

I ran out of my frozen pinkies from the swap and had to go to the pet store, they didn’t have frozen mice pinkies but rat pinkies. I bought one just to see if tude would eat it and he did, scarfed it down like it was no problem. What I am wondering is would it be better for me to continue buying the rat pinkies ans should I feed them as often as I did the mice pinkies since they are bigger?

Im going to assume Tude is a sav. Well you should feed it as much as it will eat untill it’s about a year old in age. And if it will eat the rat pinkies, feed them. But if it is a sav, you should be feeding it more insects then rodents.

Yes, tude is a savannah monitor. I only feed 1 pinkey a week. He gets about 12-15 crickets every other day of the week. I’m getting roaches in this week.

You can feed it more rodents while they are younger. You have to watch when there older because they tend to get obese. If i were you i would get into some of the larger roaches and start breeding now then you will have a ton for when its full grown. I would feed it a bit more mice, rats, or whatever your going to feed untill its larger. 50-50 worked for me.

To answer your question rats are fine to feed. Either or would work.

By every other day of the week, I meant everyday but the day I feed the pinkies. Sorry I should have been a little clearer. I thought about bumping it up to 2 pinkies a week, just needed to know if since the rat pinkies are a little bigger if that was still a good idea. I’d be asking my monitor instructor but I’m off from the zoo for like a month because of my school schedule.

Have you thought about ordering them? According to American Rodent Supply a Rat Pinkie is 4-10 grams and 1.5-2" long and a Small Mouse is 10-16 grams and 2-2.25" long. On there Rat Pinkies are $0.50 each and the slightly bigger Small Mice are $0.16 each. Would the place where you get them have equal sized mice for cheaper? Just something that came to my mind. :)

Oh okay, yeah that’s a good price. I wasn’t sure as I’ve never been to a swap/reptile show thing like that. :)

Yeah it’s pretty cheap, I get 20 large rats for 40 buck, 20 mice for 20 and 20 rat pinkies for 5. We usually buy alot more then that being that we have ALOT of reptiles to feed so it really helps us out. I used to breed, but breeding gets out of control when iot comes to rodents.
