Congratulations!

One thing, though:

Quote:

i retrieved these while she was out of the nest box for a drink.

My advice is, next time, leave her be until she’s finished laying, has completely back-filled the nest hole and flattened the surface, concealing the nest site. She may even do some random digging around the enclosure after that, but you are best off waiting until she’s finished doing what she needs to do before digging up the eggs. Female monitors are pretty hard-wired to do everything in sequence and if something goes amiss (such as her going to pack dirt around the eggs, but there being no eggs there) you could mess things up for her.

Thanks crocdoc , i will take the advice on board and leave her be next time much appreciated.

also just to add that (fortunatly) she hadent noticed and i did leave her be and she finished laying succesfully (thanks crocdoc) and i finished up with a total of 13 egg’s , twelve of which look good and the 13th one was very very soft and dented.

I am incubating them at 86f on perlite 1:1 ratio to water.

thanks all for the posts everyone ..... steve

Hi Joe , thanks for the vote of confidence , think i may have to live to be 110 to get anywere near Krusty LOL.

Over here in the UK Argus are starting to become popular but still command quite a high price (in my opinion) they sell for around £200 for a private sale to £350 in some pet store’s over here , pretty high prices i think.

Hey Steve, what is your nest box set up like? If the females are willing to cooperate, I like that idea better than having to dig up a whole enclosure for eggs.IF THEY ARE WILLING TO COOPERATE.

Gotta say, Argus are my favorite monitors, then ackies. I dont have any monitors right now, but ive seen plenty of them at shows, and I gotta say, I love the personalities of the Argus, so outgoing, and curious if you wanna put it that way. Would you like to show us the proud mom and dad of these eggs?

Congrats!! I think you will catch up to Justin when you have 50 argus, 70 ackies, 10 kims, etc etc ALL breeding. So best of luck. LOL

Congratulations Stephen! Good load of eggs. You are going to need a bigger incubator than that cooler very soon I assure you.

I "ditto" what Crocdoc said about letting her finish the process/sequence before entering and digging up eggs, but it seems to have worked out.

Matthew - all the Argus over the last 5 years are coming from one single female, not a group. I have a 1 yr old additional girl, but she’s never been mated nor laid eggs yet.

Thanks people , Matt i have a large plastic container with a lid and a hole cut in the lid and i have filled it 3/4 of the way up with a mix of top soil and perlite (to help hold the humidity) she used this extensively often sleeping in there , then she dug around for a good few days before deciding to lay.

Krusty , i have made up 2 x cooler type incubators as i have the other female that im hoping is gravid (seen her in copulation numerous times) and next time i will leave her be until she has completely finished and back filled the nest site , thank you everyone for your comments and pointers all very much appreciated.

Steve, How large(in American inches) is the nest box? I have not as yet added the dirt to my new Argus enclosure for laying being my trio is only 6 months old. Instead of having to go through the job of trying to bring in the dirt, I would like to try to limit the nesting area. I know most people on this forum will say more the better, but I would like to try less. Hopfully if the female seems to be having any problem laying, I will be able to add more.

Hi Joe , the plastic storage box i used was 48" x 24" x 30" , i filled it up three Quarters with topsoil/perlite mix dam pend down , the lid was fastened down and a hole cut to accommodate the gravid females size (you can also tape a heat-matt onto one side for extra heat) maybe a choice of 2 or 3 of these in your enclosure would work joe , the lid also holds in the humidity and keeps them feeling "secure" and keeps the nesting substrate IN the nesting box as they will empty it in no time at all with no lid , good luck joe and let me know if you do use this method and if it is successful or not.

I like the idea of setting up a couple of boxes. It will be easier to find eggs, and a big plus of your boxes for me in AZ, would be keeping in the humidity.
Thanks, Joe

Cheers , iv read and re-read all the egg threads on a couple of forums to try and "glean" any information that may be helpfull on incubation (krusty , mikes monitors, crocdocs in particular) so still a long way to go yet.
