 1st Pipping Flavirufus

After 203 days, I finally got my first Sand Monitor pipping the egg. These things are tiny. It darted back into the egg before I could get the phone cam shot, but I’ll add a pic or two later on as they start hatching out.

Thanks Stephen,

Yeah, considering Argus eggs are larger and the babies are 4" bigger, you’d sort of assume they’d be the longer-incubating species, but they’re not. My Argus are very consistently at 175 days (+/-5 days) while in the same exact conditions of incubation, these will likely be 203-220 days as they hatch out...if they all hatch out i should say. I can’t believe how much smaller they are. I raised hatchlings in 2008 of Flavi’s and I forgot just how tiny they’re born.

Also cool stuff today, I dug up some Yellow Ackies later last week and my F3 generation of Kimberley Rocks are in the oven as my F2 holdback pair gave me 8 perfect eggs from a first-time breeding pair. The female looks like a champ, no worse for wear except a little baggy. I’m feeding her some baby mice as we speak. LOL

Kim eggs off my cellphone cam:

The Flavies i did think incubation wise they would have been pretty similar to the Argus yes ,

also congratulations on the Ackies and kimms as well , brilliant news :)

Thanks. Yes, the reddish colors are pretty cool on that 2nd one. There’s a 3rd one pipped this morning but i can’t get a camera going right now. A clutch of Ackies hatched today (early) and I have to get things ready for them all day now too. Ugh!....a lot of cages to fire up and quick.

Thanks Stephen. Yes, they are freaking tiny vs Panoptes (Argus). The eggs are about 60% smaller also. I saved a few shells of both. Here’s that odd reddish one in my hand for a size reference:

Here’s a newborn V. panoptes horni (Argus Monitor):

Both lizards are right out of the incubator a day or two old.

I have 3.2 of this type of Sand Monitor (minus the babies). The males are all about 34-36" total length. The females are about 29-31". All are between 2.5 and 5 years of age and done with the explosive growth phase. They’re quite little Monitors actually.

Yeah, it’s odd. It looks like their SVL’s are almost the same but males just have much longer tails. I’d have to hold them down and measure to be certain, but it looks like this just on casual observation that the males tails are just a few inches longer.

So the whole clutch hatched out in a range from 203-224 days. The ones that pipped early are set up in cages and doing very well so far. The stragglers are about to go in cages tomorrow. The ones that are already caged immediately dug intricate long tunnel systems under the substrate (hence the ochre/orangy staining seen on this baby) and have been really ’fossorial’ so far vs. Argus babies. I was surprised just how quickly this species wants to get burrowing. Pretty cool to observe them doing this all day. They also have really lightened and colored up from the tones they had when they pipped:

I’m keeping all 6, Stephen. It took me 2 years, several combinations of animals, one female died on me, and a few bad clutches of infertiles just to get to producing this one clutch of babies. My other pair laid a whopping 4 egg clutch (of which only 2 went the distance) and those are due to hatch soon also. But that was it for viable eggs in 2010 from these two pairs of animals here. I’m raising the 6 babies all up in pairs and hoping I get a good ratio of females to males (2.4 would be nice ) and these will be my future breeders if all goes well. If by chance my two pairs of adults now suddenly start laying a lot of good eggs, I will sell some off in the future. But these are for me. LOL

Terry - this same old 10’x’5’x6’ cage is holding 1.1 of the Flavi adults. It formerly held a pair of Argus. The other Flavi pair is in a 8’x4’x4’ wooden box that is ugly as sin but it works. :)

Hey Krusty probally dont remember me but i actually ran into u at a herp show in tampa i recall awhile back ,some reason I hada feeling it was u from this site and i asked u LOL kinda odd when u said ya thats me. Anyways im a generic lookin 19 yearold kid think we were scopin out a versicolor monitor or maybe they called it "rainbow monitor" hah. Ive contacted u a few times about argus way back but i was still livin with mama. Now that have my own space really have my mind set on a flavi and figured you would be the best guy to come to. Dont know if im allowed to ask on here but do you have any forsale at the moment? I live in Florida still so could always come to you rather than ship if you do. If its not allowed on here please email me back at lizardkidd @ gmail . com

Thanksalot, Steve.
