I had an Ornatus for 3 years. It grew to 4 feet in a year and some change and they get huge, I mean thick and huge. It feared and distrusted anything that moved, including me and my bucket of mice. I could tong-feed it and that was about it. I decided to house it outdoors here in FL and let it have more privace from humans by fencing off the walls from view. It ended up consuming a small Cane Toad in the outdoor cage and frothed at the mouth and tremored, dying before I could even get a vet to accept the animal for an appointment. I miss that . LOL

Keep it warm and humid and feed it. It will get big scary fast! Pretty animal.

Yes, increase the basking temperature, humidity and it’ll eat more often.

I bet you was gutted when that happened Justin, is there nothing that can get the better of them cane toads? apart from collecting them etc.

Derek i’m just in the process of watching a common nile growing like a super weed, the quote of the day off my wife was that little monitor is a bit big isn’t it?, feeding 6 day cycle at the mo & 1 day off & she would take 2 chicks a day if i let her ( fed trout/crab/mice/chicks on a rota), not just the 1 she has am & gut loaded large crickets/bugs ect for tea time.

When setting up your cage etc, try & set everything up for a larger monitor, so you don’t have to re-set everything for the next stage of growth, there much happier if your not messing with them all the time.

Derek32,

No, your Ornate is not stunted. He/she is a beauty.

Give it heat/humidity and water with plenty of hiding spots and the appetite will increase. They develop quite the appetite, but don’t overfeed (power feed) it. Many of the large Ornate monitors folks raise end up not even able to walk without their belly dragging on the ground.

Depends male or female (males are larger). There’s no right or wrong answer as there are many factors.

There was a keeper who recently posted a picture of his adult Ornate and claimed it to be almost 8ft long but it was obvious from the picture he had exaggerated the length by a good 2ft.

Expect a male to be 6 feet and some inches. Expect a female to be 5 feet give or take. As V_o said, there are lots of variables to the overall size they can achieve. To me, anything 5 feet or more is FREAKING BIG!!!!! and I don’t care if it’s 6’8’’ or 7’2" at that point. An adult Argus male is the biggest species I will ever keep again. They’re not even 5’ long and they’re a handful to wrestle with.

Agreed. I wouldn’t be hoping for an 8 footer, a 4-6ft agile and alert lizard is tough as it is! At only 3.5ft my White Throat wants to eat me so I’d rather not imagine him 8ft. Same thing with your Argus males, Krusty. Can you imagine them that agile and alert at 8ft? Would be a nightmare. LOL.
