 Here she is!

Finally got an adult female to match up with koopa :D

They have calmed down a lot since she got here from Florida.
So far she has taken a single quail peep. She would have eaten more had it not been for Koopa, that glutenous monster haha.
I’ll have to get used to feeding them both like that.

Besides that, I’m pretty content.

I’ll take some better pics later.

She looks a little small to put in with him. That would be my concern. But she looks good, could use a little fattining up. Hopefully she won’t get to stressed.

Female Argus are ALWAYS a little small. There’s a huge size difference from males to females in this species. Males do upright chest pushing combat out wild to drive weaker males away and they probably evolved to be the biggest males get the ladies. But they look good Norf. Just watch that she’s feeding well with his gluttonous advances all the time. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone.
I’ll keep you all updated on their progress.

Steve and Greg, I do hope so!!

Krusty, I would normally feed Koopa through one of the small windows but I think I may have to start going inside the enclosure to really regulate who’s getting what.
Hopefully I don’t get my a$$ kicked!

I finished putting together a nest box yesterday with a hole that only she fits through.

I just have to fill it now.
What would you guys reccomend?
I imagine I could just mix up dirt, sand, cypress mulch and coconut fiber.

Thanks again,

Murphy

Yup, any mix of that stuff will work. They’re not that picky about the material, just that it’s kept mid-80’s and moist (not wet). Use a big big big container if you’re going to attempt "nest boxing" a lizard that likes to dig tunnels to nest. They really prefer to dig a long tunnel over a box.

Norf, get yourself two sets of long forceps or hemostats so you can feed both the male and female at once without them grabbing food from each other. What I do with my lace monitors is offer food to both at the same time but hold onto the male’s mouse/chick/rat so he can’t swallow it until the female is well under way with hers. That stops him from wolfing his down and running over to grab hers (or her head, which is the lace monitor way).

LOL. That’s the "Argus Way" as well, David. Bite her head...she drops the food.... he chases her down into a hide/burrow.....he eats everything. I actually "tail" my male (not off the ground, but as a sort of leash) and feed her a pile of mice while he can’t get to her. Then she dives at me through the door, I almost fall over and have to let go of the male....total chaos. I love it!

Thanks for all additional info.
I think I’ll be getting some very long forceps very soon, doc.
And I’ll practice that method.
I did something similar today actually. As Koopa was trying to choke down a moderately sized cavian I fed the female as quickly as possible!!

Feeding didn’t go so smooth earlier today though.

They both got their fill, Koopa got his gpig and 2 quail and the new girl got her 3 quail.
Koopa, however, got a little bit extra...a taste of my thumb.

It didn’t require stitches like last time but it startled the he11 out of me haha

Oh well.
I’ll keep posting and letting you know how things progress.

Ouch! Be careful man. Even welder’s gloves can stop the superficial bites if they glance you.

Yea I have some might as well use them.
About the nest box thing, it’s approximately 30"x15"x20". Sound ok?

Marginally "ok" but bigger is better. Watch that she uses it and nests quickly in it.
