This little gem is the first to hatch, it emerged at day 203. Really excited to be getting these to hatch again. As you can see the SIM box was used I had it filled with perlite, perhaps I’ll have enough huevos to try a different medium next time as I hate inhaling that crap!

Alex
As I said else where Congrats!
One question for you though, how many clutches have you incubated using the SIM?
Also is your perlite soaked and only there to prevent "sloshing".
Mike

Nice work, Alex! I feel the same way about it that you do about perlite - my whole motivation for using a substrate free method was to get away from the stuff. As good as it has been to me over the years by way of baby monitors, my lungs said "enough is enough", for no matter how diligent I was with goggles and face mask when dealing with the stuff, it still got everywhere. I’m sure I’ll get ’miner’s lung’ (silicosis) in a few years.

Anyway, the point to all of this is that I use aquarium filter wool to hold the water in place and stop it from sloshing. I wasn’t game to use kitchen sponge because they’re treated with assorted chemicals and invariably come with a printed warning "not to be used with aquaria". They’re probably safe, but part of me doesn’t want to gamble. Filter wool is inert and can be easily cut into a square that fits in the bottom of the SIMS container. Although it isn’t as absorbent as a sponge, it holds all of the water you’ll need for incubation.

In this photo, the greyish rectangles barely visible behind the eggs are pieces of filter wool.

Hi mike,
Thanks again for the kind words, this is the second year using the SIM with flavis, I use the perlite at 50/50 and seems to be just fine. I would like to try something else, but I’m gonna try it with ackies first before I tinker with the flavi eggs. John mentioned sponges, coco fiber, and even water crystals. I’m a little worried about just water, but if Dave has done lace I figure why not?

Hi Steve thanks again ! Yes great way to start the new year we have 5 more eggs unfortunately from another clutch x4 and one so so looking egg from this clutch that had the one pip thus far.

Cheers

Alex, you must have been typing out your post just as I posted mine. Scroll up - I’m using filter wool now rather than just water, for the sloshing effect.

Hey Dave thanks for that! Going to the LFS tomm to pick some up! That’s a great idea, I didn’t even think about it and I have a small reef tank as well. However filter floss isn’t really used for reef, nonetheless a great concept to deter sloshing.

Awesome job, Alex. I got a jumbo SIM from John at Daytona and I am going to play with a clutch or two of something in it this spring.

Perlite definitely gives you that eerie feeling that the dry dust is getting into your lungs and may one day be an issue. I pull my shirt up over my mouth and nose when scooping it in the garage. Once moistened down, it’s not so particulate in the air, but still it reminds me of fiberglass or something in my airway.

Cheers

Justin
I have to wonder how perlite might effect the hatchlings (if dry), or does the moist perlite keep down air born particulates.
I also know perlite is tried and true, but what are your thoughts?

I’ve hatched a gazillion baby Monitors on perlite Mike. I generally get them out of it once they are out of the egg fully and running around. I place them in plastic containers on slightly moist paper towels and leav e them in the incubator a few more days to absorb yolk and strengthen up. No problems ever with perlite other than a couple times a piece got in a baby’s eye and caused it to goop up. A quick flush with contact lens saline and it was fine in a day. But you can feel it when you inhale if it’s really dry and it feels toxic and scratchy on your airway. lol

Like I said I know perlite is tried and true.
I have never used it for egg’s (colubrids or varanids) so I am totally unfamiliar with it.
That being said, I saw a hatching Ackie else where with perlite all over it and it looks like it would be irritating.

Have you ever tried course vermiculite?

As a Cement Mason for over 25 years I can understand the issue with silicosis.
Mike

Yes, my first two clutches of Argus hatched on vermiculite (and in a Hovabator). There’s a subtle difference between the two materials to me. Vermiculite "feels" wet when you mix it up by weight and Perlite "feels" dry despite both being the same amount of moisture. I think Perlite wicks water into the center and provides humidity via air and not feeling so damp. So I just sorta went to Perlite and never messed with anything else again. It’s clean and white and easier to see eggs too in the dark little mini-fridges I use. But that’s subjective to what I want to look at.

Very cool read.
I currently have my 7 remaining Argus eggs in a Hovobator incubator with vermiculite. It does feel very wet. Though I haven’t tried anything else, this is my first clutch of eggs.
If I am lucky enough to get another clutch of eggs I’ll try some perlite.

Krusty, you said that you leave the babies in small plastic containers in the incubator a couple days after hatching, is that necessary?
I feel like it’s a good idea but I fear that if I wanted to try it my Hovabator would be too small.

And Alex, very nice!
Real lookers these lizards are!
Definitely a species I would very much like to work with in the future.
