Nile Monitors aren’t for everyone. (just bitching)

VENTING: It amazes me that whenever I attempt to acquire a Nile (rescue) the owner wants a ridiculous monetary compensation for their immaturity. That immaturity is that they didn’t read the fine print when they made their purchase. When it comes to any animal I have been a big believer that they should be viewed as individuals and have every right to be moody. I say this because I have come to the realization that many new monitor owners are infatuated with the power and charisma of the Monitor species in general. I honestly swear only 15 % of the owners have what it takes to go through the long haul with such an animal. I also feel that the other 85% MEAN well, but the cost and frustration that comes with domestication ( I hate that word) is too much for them to handle. The pet trade will never die and enthusiasts will always fill reptile expos. With that being the case I BEG and plead with any new monitor owners to please read up on the species interact with message boards like this one. and think on a 10+ year plan when dealing with any Reptile. Furthermore, develope your contracting skills or hit the lotto for that huge encloser that your Nile needs. (I’ve read many post on various reptile species on this site and I must say it polices it self well). That’s all the bitching I have for tonight, I have to return to building this monster cage...lol

I am not a monitor owner but that is only because I agree with you, with such a large wild animal you have to have the time and space and I love these animals but I know that I do not have the room or time for one so I will not own one, me and my fiance talked of getting one after we retire and the kids are out of the house and all our current pets are no longer with us, I have an iguana who is 4ft long but I researched everything on iguana’s for almost a yr before I rescued mine from a rescue center he was only about 11 inches at the time but I see the same thing in the iguana world to many people get them thinking they’ll be nice as long as they have them from babies and this is not true your pet will only be as nice as you treat it, 4 yrs with my iggy and he still doesn’t like when I try to take him out of his enclosure so I tend to spend alot of time in there enough that I’m building my own bench in an enclosure that takes up half of my living room and a monitor needs like twice the space an iggy needs so I just had to say I agree people need to make a 10 yr plan or longer I know my iggy has a 20 yr life expectancy so I plan to have him that long even built his enclosure to be taken apart if we move...when you plan on getting a monitor or any large reptile you have to think of that pet as a child if you couldnt afford to have a child right now then you cant afford one of these amazing animals, having children myself I often joke that raising them was easier then raising my iguana

LOL.. its funny I’m scared to death on iguanas, but can tolerate a bite from any monitor (except for Varanus salvadorii); I approach and handle those guys with much caution)..lol My hats go off to Iguana owners I was attacked in the face by one as a kid and never trusted them after that. I’ve placed a couple as a third party liaison, but will never let one in my home... My fiance is taking my love for conservation and rescue with a grain of salt, and hasn’t yelled kids yet so I’m trying to save all the monitors I can!lol I’m going to keep my next rescue for good though. I’m constructing a 8’x6’ enclosure with extensions for 12’x10’ later. I’m trying out this Heat rope as an alternative and will soon be converting the whole enclosure to solar power (a wiring nightmare) to save on getting killed on my electric bill . I plan on making this the ultimate cage. Its good to hear from a responsible herp owner I used to be on the darker side of herp own and makes me feel good and motivated to know there are responsible herp owners out there!!!!! do you have any pics of your enclosure
