 Time to progress

So a few questions.

One, after having my savannah for almost a year and a half now and right at two feet I still haven’t seen any eggs. My plan is to dig up and search unless you guys can give me decimate cues as to what Im looking for. She has swelled up, and taken big dumps and then other times not so sure as to what happened. I just want to see I’m doing well, because by this time she should! Sound like an okay plan?

Two, and this happens only if I’ve found eggs, I’m ready to get a male savannah. Same size or close. How should I introduce and where can I find a two foot male that’s healthy? Thanks guys.

Try digging around in areas you see her returning to most often.
If there is any possibility that she could be retaining infertile eggs, you would want to pick up on it fast.
Try introducing a nest box, or nesting area with softer substrates. It may be easier to find eggs that way if she is holding any.
When it comes to introducing adult monitors you need to make sure that you have a second enclosure up and running in case anything goes wrong.
Put them both together in the enclosure and watch. If you see any overly aggressive behavior you’ll need to separate them before serious damage is done.
Well that’s the extent of my personal experiences.

Best of luck man

I used a mixture of dirt, river sand, coconut fiber and cypress mulch.

If/when you get a male, either have a separate enclosure ready - OR - build a separation wall inside the enclosure so that you can separate them within the enclosure.

I’ll have to do the second.
Man I just dug up everywhere I THINK there could have been eggs and nothing. Granted maybe some detiorated but I could not find a thing.
This is becoming quite disappointing, I dont know what else I can do other than try a nest box, but I’ve heard cons about that from Justin.

Everything is going to have it’s pro’s and cons.
The best thing to do is to try a few different things and see what works.

Also, how does retaining eggs occur?

Just a box really with a lid that can flip open. Or you can pick up a large Tupperware bin and fill it with substrate with a large hole on the lid. Either one you’ll be filling it to the top with substrate so she can dig her way down.
As far as dimensions go, just go big. About as long as the monitor is even and 2’ wide, 2-3’ up.
I also need to upgrade my nest box for my Argus pair. The one I constructed is waay too small haha

Retained eggs usually occurs when the female does not find a suitable location to lay.
I’ve even heard of some monitors just laying in the tub of water provided for submersing in.
So it’s kind of a better safe than sorry situation.

Do you put it entirely above ground? Or just somewhat.

You can bury it completely or just half way if you like
