 LOST ALL IN FIRE

I wont be around anymore guys. I have just went through hell. A valve malfunction to my heat cause both sheds I had to burn down. Same setup has worked for over 5 years now. I lost 11 ackies. My female ackie is in critcal condition and most likely will be put down. She burrowed deep into substrate but seems to have breathing issues. Both croc monitors, 2000 dubia, red tegu, both tristis and several odds and ends. Just when I thought I was getting this figured out and working order.

Sad to hear this. Terrible, terrible news. Gatorhunter worked his rear off caring for his animals and was having success that a lot of us here never have. Makes me sick to think about this.

For this to not be an issue for over 5 years goes to show that we all need to do our best to continuously inspect our setups. Did the valve malfunction happen while you were out and about?

I am terribly sorry Dustin. I wish I knew what to say. Things like this is always in the back of my mind when I am not at home or away from my monitors. Hope to hear from you soon.

 LOST ALL IN FIRE

Dustin - what exactly did you mean a valve got stuck causing the fire? Did you have some type of space heater that got stuck in the "on" position or what exactly started the fire? It may benefit others to know what not to do. I recently warned a few people about the dangers of using heat mats with material on top of them and NOT having air spaces around the mats to cool off. One guy sent me a pic of his Kane mat all melted and deformed showing the reality of how careful we have to be using all these heating sources on our animals.

 LOST ALL IN FIRE

@ Justin,
It was a propane space heater that was used as a back up for cold days. It was in the open and protected by medal to keep the monitors off and away. The vavle did not prevent the fire from back burning through the pipe. I’m not postive on all the details because I was not there. By the time I arrived everything was burn to the ground. I’m only going off neighbors and sheriff that witness it. I’m told that somehow it made back to the propane bottle. By doing so it turned the propane tank into a torch and shot a large fire stream. Two guys I guys witness it at this point. The said they started to try to get hoses to put it out but the propane tank split and bursted (didn’t explode but split through the side). I kept everything locked up so they could do anything. The fire burned hot enough and burned the grass over to my other building and caught it own fire. Do to safety no one could do anything. Once the propane burned out then they got hoses on the other building but to late for the most part. I live 15 miles in the country so no one showed up for a while. I guess it took the sheriff 45mins to get (I was told by neighbors and fire department never showed). I live at the edge of a county and even though the closes fire department is 18miles away, it is in the wrong county. My county’s fire department is 45miles away and never turned to call over to the closer fire department. The are many things I find very odd and frustrating. stories Im told have holes and differ per person. I was told it was a freak accident for the most part by what the sheriff gathered from witness. The fire was hot enough that it melted glass, warped metal, and burned 5 inch in diameter logs to nothing but ashes in the crocs cage. The heater actually was decent looking but the valve located outside and beside the building was melted and spilt and was the fail point so im told. The best preventive measure would have been to route gas line further from building so that safety concerns of explosion would not have been such a factor and to have a sprinkler system installed. I actually had the tank 20ft away before I moved. I just moved to Oklahoma and routed it close to get things back and running quickly. The heater functioned correctly for the 2 months I have been here so once
I again I just don’t know why this happened. I was actually in prep work to expanding and starting all new setups for my growing collection and was at the break over point of it being a money pit hobby to starting to be slighty profitable. I had many tanks, plastic tubs, pumps, lights etc that I was starting to stock pile that all went. I was already talking to my gf about setting up some kind of insurance on it all after my last clutch of eggs hatched.

Sorry if I left anything out or repeated. I typed this off my phone. I just know that if my female ackie survives then her name from now will be hope or Miracle. I can’t remember if I mentioned how my female survived or not. She was buried at the bottom of her soil and right in the center of her cage. It happened to be the last corner to burn and therefore never got the full intensity. I hope she makes it just to give me something to hold on too. I have buried many pets in my life growing up but I can personally tell you anything that has been burned or charred to death is so dishearting that it’s enough to make you want to never want to touch a reptile again. Almost like family or friends to me.
Sorry I’m starting to ramble and it’s starting to tear me up just thinking about it in this detail. I sorry if there is confusion but there is just questions I just don’t have answers for. Thanks
Guys for the support.
Dustin

I reread for a second and sorry for spelling and stuff. Brain is scrambled. Just thought I would clear it up that neighbors got there near the beginning and sheriff showed up before me but pretty much at the end of this event. He gathered info and passed to me. I’ll try to keep any new updates going and may find out more pieces to the puzzle with time.

Wow, again I am very sorry to hear this happened to you. I sure hope the Ackie pulls through for you. Sounds like a freak thing with the propane tank. Scary. At the very least, your home and family was unaffected though.

A good friend of mine had his entire reptile shop burn down a few years back. He 1500 animals not including feeders like mice/rats/crickets/roaches/rabbits/etc. The lone survivor was an albino burmese python who escaped the burning building during the fire.

I hope your Ackie pulls through.

She is doing pretty well. Not one burn mark, good movement and clear eyes. She was warmed up this morning, active, and had her fighting spirit. The sand was moist at the bottom and insulated her from the heat is my guess. I guesstimate the temp to be about 120f where she was at.
