Another Sav gone before it’s time
So I work at a petco (I know AAHHHH NOOO HORIBLE!!!) not this one though. My reptiles are well cared for, temps actually correct for the animal and food is correct too. My GM and I are reptile crazy ladies and the big shots have learned not to tell us what we can and cant do at our store. Since we started working there 2 years ago few have died and those that do are mostly bad breeding. Anyways back to the post. Another store had a juvie sav brought in in a shoe box. The "reptile" lady there came to my store with him and I found her in the cat food area looking for food. I found this odd as she doesnt own cats so I asked why she was there. Her response "oh Im getting food for this dragon thing someone brought in".......I asked to see it and knew right away it was a sav, and only about a foot long. Very cold and not moving either. I told her in a very strong way to get out of the cat food section and into the reptile area. I tried very hard to get him away from her but she said she wasnt going to give him up. I got her some live crickets, liquid calcium and vitamins, canned crickets, grasshoppers and frozen silver sides to get her started. Plus a rundown of what he needed to thrive. Told her to get the powersun 100 and a 40 breeder for the time being. She walked out with 12 large crickets!!!! I saw her today and asked how it was doing and she said it died. I asked her what she fed it she said it never ate for her. Then I asked what the temp was in the cage, she said it was in a 20 long (WTF!!!) with a 50watt light and 75 temp in the cage!!! I about flipped out on her. I told her again the proper basking temp and temp gradient to the cool side. He response? (well now you are making me feel like I killed it, thats mean) Well duh you killed it, that poor baby could have been fine if she would have let him go. I had a 75 gallon tank empty 2 100 watt powersuns that he could have used while I got a new cage built. I was soooo mad, I told her it was her fault and she should feel bad. She walked out saying I was a jerk and she didnt know any better. UGH!!

Another Sav gone before it’s time Husbandry mistakes and misinformation kill off most Monitor lizards. It happens with 98% of Savannah Monitors every year and thousands upon thousands of them are imported each year. The whole cycle is sort of nauseating.

Another Sav gone before it’s time Agreed. Which is why I would love to get a male. Keep your eyes and ears out my friend, I’m sticking with this species.

Another Sav gone before it’s time Go on Craigslist. There are gazillions of them listed all the time, at least here in Florida there are. I even saw a CL listing of true CBB babies where the seller showed pics of the female laying eggs in a shallow hole and eggs hatching - no lie and real deal - and the babies were being sold locally for $50/ea! This girl probably had no idea how rare of an occurance she had as she wasn’t online a lot and really "into" Monitors I don’t think.

Another Sav gone before it’s time It makes me sick when I see and hear of them being kept in bad conditions. It was a beautiful sav too, was even hissing when I took it out of the box to look at it. I was happy to see it, everyone thought I was crazy for being happy about it until I told them it was a good sign. I’m glad we dont sell them at my store anymore, nor in any petco store in the district.

Another Sav gone before it’s time I was looking around on Kijiji just to see what monitors were on there and I saw someone with an ad for a savannah and this is what it said.. "1 year old savannah, comes with 90 gallon tank, water dish and one hide. Makes a great pet because it will eat anything like hot dogs, cat food, dog food etc." I messaged the person and absolutely freaked on them for all of this that they have done to this poor animal. If I had the extra money and space I would have taken it from them in a second!

Another Sav gone before it’s time It’s poor education and people who just don’t care. It’s a cheap animal and when it dies they can go get another one for less than $50 bucks. I know some people dont agree with me on this but I think you need a permit for these animals. Anything that can be dangerous you should have one for. I had to go pick up a 7ft RTB yesterday because they had a baby and the snake was trying to get out of the cage. They have it in an all glass 55 gallon with a screen top and nothing to clamp locks onto. To hold her in they had a 5lbs weight on it. This wouldnt happen if permits were issued. Many animals would be saved too.

Another Sav gone before it’s time A lot of the issue is the pet stores not providing proper care information. I was just at a local pet shop to pick up some new basking lights and mentioned how much work it is to take care of a monitor and the owner of the store said, no they are super easy to care for just get an aquarium with a rock and a bowl of water and throw in a can of cat food every other day.
I could not believe that, that was the advice she is handing out. I told her that not one of the things she mentioned is even remotely ok for a monitor and all she did was roll her eyes and tell me that she has been doing this for many years.. .. long story short, i had a few choice words for her and left went to another store to make my purchase.

Another Sav gone before it’s time This isn’t just a reptile/lizard problem. Far too many animals/pets are kept in horrendous conditions. Especially the throw away (free or inexpensive) pets like cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. Basically, a large percentage of people suck.
The best way to help is by not buying any of these animals from a pet store. Support CBB and responsible breeders.
Requiring permits is one small, slippery, step away from an all out ban.

Another Sav gone before it’s time Despite the poor education it’s also the businesses fault for selling to just anybody. I mean look at the kid that was on here bragging about all his monitors he had just gotten and had no clue what he was getting into. Instead of jumping on a sale these people should really consider if the person is really willing to deal with the animal and not sell to people who have either no experience or teenagers. I think larger reptiles should have to be chipped and have permits that way there is control on who is allowed to have them. Only people who are responsible enough to care for these animals properly should be allowed.

Another Sav gone before it’s time Permit systems can be tricky.. or slippery as mentioned above.
Though I am in favor of a solution to force all these disgusting "pet shops" to close down one by one until only the responsible private CBB remain. Even the most professional "pet shops" with the most "responsible" reputations have their skeletons in the closet and it’s always about making a quick buck.
Want a monitor? Buy from responsible CBB breeder.

Another Sav gone before it’s time I literally talk people out of buying Argus when they seem to not understand (or are going to provide) the necessities of housing and feeding a 4 foot plus lizard like a big Monitor. An Argus is 1/2 the size of a Water or Croc too, mind you, and they are still a real handful. Luckily (for me LOL), I steer them to Ackies or some other dwarfs that I breed instead and really do my best to NOT put big Monitors in kids’ and unrealistic people’s hands. But it takes me a couple months to house baby Argus b/c I feel it really is irresponsible to ’dupe’ people into buying these things and I care more about the lizard than the person’s feelings in the end.

Another Sav gone before it’s time for me there’s two stages of husbandry skill to monitor keeping, 1st stage is getting them from a hatching to breeding age, which sounds simple but as most new keepers are trying to bring them on in dehydration boxes it’s not long before most are wiped out.
If stage 1 is successful you have a 50/50 chance of passing stage 2 with success, if you have a female you need to understand & be able to read the breeding circle behaviour & have a set-up that meets her needs in order to succeed.
Most keepers however successful they are at stage 1 full down at this hurdle or get lucky for a short while if the habitat falls short of the female monitors needs, after the 1st /2nd time egg laying they usually develop some kind of egg related problems such as been egg bound.
Then taking into account most pet shops have holding cells/cages for their lizards whilst their waiting for buyers & are kept at the minimal temps & feeding requirements, then the new keepers see these set-ups in the shops & copies the pet shop set-ups, then they join a forum & start following forums feeding & heating/basking advice.
Resulting in monitors been kept in fishtanks with no lids, very little substrate & huge lamps that bake the hell out of them.
Get it right from the start, well built tank, that holds humidity & allows for warm areas in deep sandy loam substrate, with lamps that provide the right surface basking temp snout to vent spot flood.
& it’s a piece of psmiley :)
ps well if your called Justin/crocdoc & many others that do it right from the start!! :)
