Black Throat Monitor I want to get a Black Throat Monitor and I’m wondering if they are appropriate as pets. I also have two dogs, would that be a problem? Are females or males better pets? Also what’s a trustworthy site that I could purchase one from? I plan on raising it from a hatchling so that it will have a stronger bond with me over time.
Thanks for your help yall!

Black Throat Monitor That all depends on what you are wanting one for? If you want a pet, they suck! You can’t cuddle them or play with them, you have to house them in a room size enclosure with a lot of heat and humidity and feed them a lot of food, 7 foot animals require a fair amount of rats!
I can’t see why the dogs would be a problem... Unless you plan on letting it free roam once a while in which case the dog will get hurt. Little dogs will get eaten, big dogs will get whipped!
Females tend to be a bit smaller than males but are still considered beasts. Do you have any reptile experience? If not then these really arent for you.
Cheers

Black Throat Monitor
Thanks for letting me know that
I have little experience with reptiles. The longest I spent with a lizard was a week, and it was an iguana. He was pretty chill. He was a vegetarian, but I don’t mind feeding my reptile rats or mice or whatever.
I want a monitor because they’re beautiful and interesting animals . . .and I want a big lizard that I could let roam around in my yard.
What kind of monitor would be best?
btw I’m not looking to cuddle it either lol my dogs suffice in that department.
Thanks again!

Black Throat Monitor I’m going to be pretty blunt with you, monitors are not beginner reptiles - the only one that may be considered beginner is an Ackie but they reach 2ft so aren’t what you are after. The bigger the monitor, the harder they are to keep as it is extremely rare for them to enjoy human attention so it is hard to care for them. Most monitors won’t happily sit in a garden - they will make a break for it!
Why don’t you get a Iguana? I am no expert but they get big and apparently succome to humans a lot easier than monitors do...

Black Throat Monitor I agree with Daryl a Blackthroat is NO beginner monitor, like he said Ackies would be the best choice. You have to work your way to the monsters you can’t just jump right in.. Thats how monitors get dumped. Not saying you would but thats a good reason why. Simply because of the size, the lack of ability to tame down like most people want and the heating and food get expensive. Monitors are pretty much just big display animals.
If you are looking for something that can get of reasonable size and still tame down get an Iguana or a Black and White Tegu. The tegu is similar to a monitor and will get to 3-4 feet in size but are way more likely to tame down.
But my opinion start small and work your way up.

Black Throat Monitor Let’s put it in a differnt perspective. What would you do with a 6 oot lizard thats wicked fast and hates you, and all it want’s to do when your around is hiss and tail whip or even try to bite. What if the lizard picks a fight with the dog and they both get torn up. Can you handle the situation. There not pet’s or gentle giant’s. There one of the worlds most primal beast.
A black throat monitor is not for some one who has never had a monitor, let alone no lizard experince at all.

Black Throat Monitor Good luck getting a Blackthroat monitor right now anyhow. The main export country they came from (Tanzania) has banned all wildlife exports pending an investigation into wildlife smuggling. Big mess over there so thats why no babies in the past year. If you wanted one, you’d have to buy an adult from a classifieds section, but I wouldn’t recommend...

Black Throat Monitor evry one is right a Black Thrt isnt a good begginer, or my persnal opinion no monitor is ,,, not even ackies because they require the same amount of work as the big ones just smaller enclosure and cheaper food bill.. but if you’re truely passionate for monitors, and you will provide evrything it needs, and if you normally have alot of time unused. then i wouldnt discourage you from getting one. because if you truely care about your"" (pet BT) ". then you will use that time researching and bonding with your monitor .. and maby you will have a true PET monitor.. me personally i have a savannah which is closely related to the blackthroat and are very similar in alot of ways. but he’s a little bozo 50% of the time. but my water monitor is chill but adventurous 99% of the time. but they both get huge and require alot of space, money, and time. to provide what you want them to become for yourself. but dont let youtube videos make you think that all monitors are like those that you see. because while alot CAN be tamed down.. most WONT be tamed down . so keep that in mind.. but if you got the time , patience, money, and space to do what is needed. i say get em!.. you and your monitor can teach eachother as you both grow.. and there are alot of very knowlegable people like the guys above me that can help you through the journy with your new monitor ... - GoodLuck.. :-:Jay..:-

Black Throat Monitor
Thanks for the advice you guys!
I’ve been researching and I thought about it...and I think I’ll get an Argentine black and white Tegu...maybe two. I know some people who have them and from what they tell me they’re pretty kool and they get as big as I want too so that’s a plus . . .the forum for Tegus is weak though. That sucks >_<

Black Throat Monitor I would say start with one...
You said you have no experiance with reptile’s, and Tegu’s can also be a huge handful just like big monitor’s.
Should take baby steps...
