#2269608 Mason12 View Profile	Basking bulb? What is the exact name of your basking bulb and the wattage? I have a 75watt zoo med halogen and it barely gets the temps up to 95 and the rock is 6-7 inches away! trying to get temps of 120-140 so what do you all use?

#2269612 Krusty View Profile	Message To: Mason12   In reference to Message Id: 2269608  Basking bulb? GE and Phillips brand - halogen flood light - par 38 usually - and I tend to use 45 or 50Watt in a bank of 2 or 3 for a larger cage and just one bulb in a small cage.

I can run a non-halogen at 6 inches and get proper bask temps with a 60 watt. A 75 watt halogen should easily hit 130 deg. That zoo-med bulb must be crap. Get one as Krusty suggested.

Because a 75 watt halogen will easily hit 120-130 from 10-12 inches away ( I know because I used it before) but also what are you using as a basking spot? The best choice would be a big rock or something similar.

Thin rocks get hot, but take longer to get to the right temp. A think rock takes more heat to get up to par. For me log’s seem to heat up the fastest.

The wood, which has some substrate on it warms up nicely. The wood sits atop a mound of substrate which my Savannah has his primary burrow. I wet the wood and substrate surrounding the area liberally to increase humidity. I really ought to switch over to 3 65 watt floods when he gets bigger. Currently, 24-26in @ 14mos.

#2269651 SalvatorREX View Profile	Message To: Mason12   In reference to Message Id: 2269608  Basking bulb? my cages have two basking spots at day, and 2 at night. day time is 150 watt fluckers incandescent basking bulb. and a 150 watt powersun uva/uvb . night time are 150 watt. exo ter infard bulbs. but the brand names dont matter a basking bulb is a good basking bulb as long as it provides enough heat.. i just like the ones i use personally because of the uva,uvb. they dont need it. but its good to have..

Just got this bulb dont have a temp gun but my thermometer says its around 115 but just in the area not the actual rock(i put it on the rack and it started to melt) the rock is like 8 in away and gets REALLY really hot like i cant touch it for more than 3 seconds. im worried if itll burn my bosc!

You can buy temps guns almost any where it seem. They just have different names on them. It’s just a infared gun that read’s surface temps. You can get them I know forsure at hobby shop’s cause they use them to read the temp of RC gas powered engines. You want to use lower watt bulbs and just raise or lower the basking spot to aquire the right basking temp, not buy high wattage bulbs. -Terry

The higher the wattage the more focused the light beam really is and the hotter that little area is in which can burn your monitor. You are better to get like 2 45 watt bulbs to cover a greater distance while still provide that 132 surface temp.

You are gonna want to have them in a row with the ends of the light rays touching. You want a continuous line of light for them to use as a basking area so they can bask their entire body or at least SVL.

As Justin said higher up on this thread, if it is for a smaller enclosure you really only need one bulb but still go A LOT smaller.. like try a 45 or 50. If you can tell us the size of the enclosure, size of the monitor and the size of the basking rock, it would make things a lot easier for you.

See this is when it gets tricky because you want to keep that 120-135 degree basking spot but you want to make sure you are offering enough lights to cover his SVL. If there is enough light to cover the SVL then you should be fine.
