 Requesting Adult microstictus pics

I feel like I’ve seen a million pictures of Albigularis and Ionides...but can anyone show me pictures of a reasonably sized adult male Microstictus?

It’s easy to read about sizes but I’m just wondering. Mine is growing like a maniac, and he’s been growing like a maniac and has the most hilarious attitude...I serve my thawed rats from sandwich bags, and it did not take him long to learn to recognize the sandwich bag...he goes nuts if he sees one. I love the new adventures to find "whole" food from obscure stores and places. Going crawfish hunting soon! Have spent the last month learning Google Sketchup to model a huge renovation to his 8x6 enclosure. I cannot believe, after hearing so many stories of flighty monitors, how inquisitve mine is. I’m very happy and he seems very healthy and active. It’s been non-stop labor since I got him, but it sure is starting to pay off watching him grow. At this point, I don’t want him to stop!

i can’t be sure, do not know the hatch date. i purchased him in August, i think, last year and he was less than 10" total length. i tried measuring him again last month and he was roughly 32" total length i believe? and most definitely male. i’m at work but I’ll post up when i get home.

Microstictus grow fast but don’t get very big compared to other Albigularis subspecies such as Angolensis and "Ionides". Yet to see an adult microstictus hit 5ft. They end up in the 3.5 to 4.5ft range depending on sex.

And yes, they catch on to those plastic baggies QUICK. Same thing with brown paper bags.

great pictures! though without a size reference its still difficult to tell. on one hand, its nice to know my enclosure should suit his full adult size. on the other hand, i was prepared to raise a giant. when you cite 3.5-4.5 ft, t is safe to assume this refers to total length? without an accurate reference, i would estimate that my monitor is quite nearly at adult size already.

Find some adult photos of a. albigularis they get roughly the same size... will be easier to locate than micros... due to the confusion over micros and ionidesia...

I just moved and had to tear down and re-build my enclosure. I took the opportunity to completely renovate. I added several new elevated hides, added the appropriate number of basking bulbs for his size, viewing lights, an automated misting system, digital timers, huge tub plumbed for easy drainage... here are some sneak peeks. Should have dirt in it by tomorrow. Poor fella has been in a 4x2 temporarily for a week while this gets finished. He’s not happy about it, but it will be worth it tomorrow.

I don’t believe so.. You can tell the difference in the pattern between the two. The albigularis albigularis’ pattern continues higher up on the neck and is different on the tail, as well there is a difference in the broadness of the heads between them. Also the abigularis albigularis seems to have a "whiter" facial region compared to the microstictus.

In the group of three the albigularis albigularis is at the top left.

Those are just my observations..

Actually, neither of those above are V. A. albigularis. They are hybrids. Actual photos of V. A. albig are below...

V. Albigularis albigularis

Actually your wrong V_O, cape/banded white throat and white throat’s are both V.a.albigularis. Chad had some of the biggest and nicest albig’s i’ve seen on a forum, it to bad he doesn’t still have them, and thank’s for the photo’s for comparison.

Quote:

They are hybrids.

That’s funny since they were fresh imports....

Anyway’s Cape or South African V. a. albigularis have similar patterns to more northern V. a. albigularis, just different color and generally size but that’s not always the case.

Either way the animals labeled V. a. albigularis and the animals you posted, all are V. a. albigularis.

Cheers,
Chad

Hiya chad there is no reason why they couldnt be hybrids and fresh imports...

Not enoughs been done with this group of animals to be fully aware of what exactly goes on in SA between the sub-species.

There’s actually a lot of mumbling that the different "types" of Albigularis do not fall into precise regions and that they naturally intergrade, leading to a lot of confusing animals who don’t exactly look "Ionidesi" vs "White Throat" vs "Cape Banded". I think the Angolensis are the only ones that have clear boundaries, then there’s the rest.....
