 Argus Monitor health concern

Wondering if anyone knows what this bump is on the back of my 1.5 year old Argus Monitor, he was fine and didn’t have it when i shut his light off last night then when i turned it on this morning he was having a hard time using his back legs to walk and moving really slowly then i noticed the bump on his spine just above his tail.

I don’t know if i should take him to a vet or if this will heal and blow away, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Defect in the vertebrae causing the spinal nerves to protrude? No clue unless you post x-rays.

Have you gone to the vet yet? Why not? He needs a vet.

It’s a spine fracture. The bump is the actual spine out of position. The nerves get pinched and they can lose use of their back legs and/or ability to crap. It’s very serious and you need a vet. It is from a form of hypocalcemia/bad nutrition and inadequate heat. Basically, metabolic bone disease make the spine fragile and fractures occur easily. Go to the vet and work on proper heat and diet. No feeding meat and eggs. Whole mice and dusted insects only.

Here are the xrays i just got today, the vet gave me some anti inflamitorey medicine to give to him once a day for a week to reduce the swelling and said it should re-align back and the nerves that are pinched atm should straighten out, she said he probably wont get 100% back but maybe close, she said to wait it out and see...

Anti-inflammatories are sort of a catch-22 though as they inhibit (slow down) bone healing, but will reduce swelling pressure on the nerves so the back legs can move and he can still poop, plus helps with pain.

What are you doing about the CAUSE of why his back broke in the first place? You probably should use a Mercury Vapor Bulb and feed only whole mice and dusted bugs in Calcium and D3 every feeding for a few weeks. Make sure the cage is pretty warm (80’s-90’s) and the basking surface is 130°F as well. The heat lets them heal up quicker than if you left the cage and diet "as is" (which likely will have another fracture occur without the changes). Good luck. That’s not the worst fracture I’ve seen and probably will heal with just a residual bump.

i changed the bulb like you said, the basking spot i have at about 130, feeding just whole mice now, gotta go buy some more calcium though for him, i removed everything in the cage atm so he doesnt hurt himself any further, im going to remodel his cage when he heals so this never happens again, thanks for the info though its helping a lot :)
