 Baby Sand Monitors (Flavirufus)

Took a couple cellphone pics of one today. These were born in June this year and doing well so far:

(no flash)

(flash photo)

The colors are just not really well represented in pics with these damn things vs in person. I can’t figure out why....

Justin , the animal pictured looks absolutely stunning , obviously much brighter and richer colouration seen first hand but you can tell from the non-flash photo that it is indeed a gorgeous individual.

Great job as always!

Do they keep that colour as adults, or does it fade?

Daryl - the contrast fades on the rosettes (the yellow/red flowery pattern on the back) and sort of becomes a golden yellow on the dark color. So it fades somewhat like most Monitor lizards, changes a bit at least from baby to adult markings. While they seem variable as babies, they all sort of become the same look as adults though. The tail becomes solid pale yellow on the distal 1/3rd as they get older. That part actually gets better on adults. LOL

Here’s a 6-7 year old 35" long male after I hosed the cage down (pardon the steamy-foggy cell camera image). He was not happy with me for doing this as you can tell by his expression.

Is that the common adult size justin? 3’ give or take? Never heard of these ones before. Very nice looking, Like a smaller Argus almost.

Do they come with a hefty price tag?

Thanks. The females of mine so far (1 well over 5 yrs old) are about 31-32" TL and males 36" max. They are much smaller than Argus or crosses of Gouldii x Panoptes. My oldest Argus Panoptes male is pushing 5’ almost and his girl is 39".

Shane - there just aren’t a whole lot of them around or kept. I’ll try to post them up more often, but I admit I tend to show Kims or Ackies more often as they have more "action" each month with babies and stuff like that.

Cheers
