Mean becuase of live food? I bought my savannah monitor about 3 weeks ago and it has been really really nice and tame and doesnt really care for being held much but will let me without ease. I only feed it frozen food. Is it true that if you have your monitor tear up and kill viciously. That as a long term effect they will on average be more aggressive? I dont know if this is true but the petstore owner told me not to feed it live. So i have my own supply of rodents and it would be a lot easier if i didnt have to kill them before feeding my sav. PLZ HELP. Any opinions will be of help

Mean becuase of live food? I have heard this my whole life. When I was younger I used to feed my savannah monitor live mice. Back then we did not have stores around the corner to buy frozen mice or any inklin of where to order frozen mice. Anyway he did not show any aggression. My timor monitors eat live pinkies and fuzzies, and on occasion have been known to accidently bite a finger mistaking it for food. Some reptiles and some species of reptiles have different feeding responses. I personally like to feed pre-killed. Easier to keep, no smells, no cleaning and feeding. Even dead my monitors will still swing the rodent around and tear it open with its claws to where the intestines are thrown all over the place.

Thats an old "petstore monitor book" rumor.. They eat whichver is offered to them, its always safer to feed frozen thawed, it smells alot less, its easier to care for the mice, and takes alot less room up. Some feed both, also alot of people know how hard it is to get snakes to start eating frozen thawed, so they will tell you to stick with frozen thawed mice and not live or your monitor will get aggressive, little do they know that monitors eat frozen thawed just as fast as live, that demonstrates so many petsores with their blanket care mentality (if it has scales like a snake, care for it like a snake). Of course thats because they either dont know any better or dont care what happens to the animals.

Thats an old "petstore monitor book" rumor.. the aggression is usually just a feeding response.they just get anxious to eat and will mistake the hand that feeds for food.i personally do not believe this theory.my old nile ate live, but it was handlable.i switched to frozen for the simple fact of convenient storage. i feed my argus only frozen rats and pre-killed grasshoppers and snails in a can.this does not change the fact that he attacks my hand when feeding or cage cleaning.i believe it depends on the individual monitor itself,it’s age(jueveniles of all species tend to be more aggressive and flighty)the species and how much work and patience you have with it.while in the cage my argus is vicious.once it is out it’s temperament calms down a little, but it is still defensive and wary of it’s suroundings.i hope to overcome this with some patience and time.i have done a little leash training and unless repeated often,it will not become accustomed to handling or the leash"my momma drank it straight from the bottle"
