Need help with taming Well here’s the deal: I bought a sav about 2 mos ago. He wasn’t a hatchling, but still a juvenlie, about 8 inches long. Of course I got him from a pet store, so I don’t know much about his origins. But he was healthy and had a good disposition, so I went for it. The problem is, he’s getting pretty feisty. I’m handling him about 1-2 hrs a day, but I gotta hold on to him or he’ll dart. I also switched him from pinkies and crickets to pinkies only, now to fuzzies only. Could I just have bought him too late to tame him? Lastly, for substrate I’m using carpeting. I’m sure thats not going to go over well here, but could that affect his temperament? Appreciate any help, thanks.

Need help with taming First of all I want you to know that I am no professional. BUT, I do have a sav. I bought mine at about 15 inch. He was pretty aggressive when I got him. I handle him as much as I can but with work it aint much. Probably as much as you. I’ve only had him about 1 month, but he is already coming around. Its not about taming it, but about learning what he likes and dislikes. Remember that each monitor has its own personality. People will say that savs are the easiest to tame, but its all up to the monitor from what I’ve read. You do need to handle your sav though to let him get used to you. From what I’ve read is that he will never "like" getting handled, but after a while he will put up with letting you handle him a little more. Also, Ive learned from experience that by not holding on to him all the time helps to. Let him run around your bed or in a room that is safe, and let him come to you. You are warm and he will want the heat, so after a while he will learn that he can warm up on your lap and end up climbing up on you. Remeber that he probably isnt doing this cause he likes you, but just because he wants to warm up. But like I said, im no proffesional. I just try to remember the stuff that I hear and I try it to see if it works. Hope this helped a little.

Need help with taming When you first pick it up it is thinking "Ohno!!! That big, ugly creature is going to eat me!!" So it plays dead. Once it sees an escape it bolts. Lay off the handling for a couple of weeks and just do basic cage maintanance, like spot cleaning and water changes. It will hopefully see you as a food source and not a predator. This is how you gain trust. It is a reptile and will never become tame. Not all savs are handleable. I have had 5 and one was hell on wheels. She would attack when you opened the door. It wasn’t a bluff charge, she meant bussiness. Some animals calm down better than others. Hopefully your will too.Scott
