 Claws

does any one here trim their large monitor’s claws or do you put rocks in to help file them down. Rachel and i will be building on to our water monitors cage soon(making it bigger) and i was thinking of doing a section in tile to help with the claws since the boulder i had in there was of no interest to her. any ideas or should i go back to handling her with gloves?

Tile is usually smooth and slippery, if you are building your own cage, then try putting a 2" thick layer of top-crete. It’s concrete formulated for less than 2" applications. When it dries it will leave a coarse surface that will file nails but that isn’t jagged(smooth it with your trowel when you lay it) so it won’t hurt there bodies. I’ts also water proof and very durable so your powerful monitors won’t tear it up.

if we use crete it would have to be specco water stopper cement so water won’t go through it. this is the only cement approved for sealing around water supplies. they have rough tile it is unglazed porus tile not smooth finesh. the concrete is a good idea maybe i will use the specco instead of tile.

I rarely ever even trim any of my monitors claws.

The reason they dont need it for a year or more at a time is the dirt they live in, they dig and wear them down. This is what they do in the wild also, they climb, and dig, this controls the claws.

mine digs her little heart out and still cuts me open real good. if she gets any heavier(which she will) i will need stitches every time i pick her up.
