 Freckled Monitors

Haven’t been on here in ages, but somebody requested that I post some updated pics of my Freckleds. These are the best that I could get as they are a bit skittish. Enjoy!

Thanks Shawdow! Yeah that was me with the one that was dragging his hind legs. He was shipped to me that way! Took him to the vet and he was impacted like I assumed. He finally passed a bright orange aquarium rock- which was quite big compared to his small size. I’m not sure what the guy I bought him off was using as substrate as he claimed he kept them on dirt! Anyways he is doing great now, eating like a little pig and growing sooo fast. So I have 5 Freckleds now, 4 yellow ackies and 3 hatchling red ackies- might have to post some pics of them soon.

Haha...actually yeah Mertens are on my list to get in the next year, as well as some lacies. Just waiting until we move so that we can build enclosures outside that will be big enough for them! I actually contacted a breeder about some hatchy mertens he had for sale, but they were sold before I could get to them :-( Yup...you do have to have certain permits to keep herps in Aussie, depending on which state you live in. I live in Queensland and all you need here is your basic reptile keeping licence issued by the Parks and Wildlife Service. My licence covers all reptiles, except elapids and crocs. Also in Queensland pet shops are only allowed to sell a select few reptile species...beardies, a few python, turtle and gecko species, and a couple of skinks. Pretty much anything else you want you have to buy from private breeders- which is good. Other states are more strict in what you can keep- they have different classes of permits depending on your experience. I don’t know...its confusing. I hope that makes sense haha.

Beautiful monitors you guys got there. I love V. Tristis Orientalis. So you both live in Australia correct? What does it take for you to get a basic permit to keep herps? I do want to move to Australia within the next few years. Possibly transfer to a college over there. Ive ALWAYS wanted to go there. Well thanks for sharing your pics JDobes and Master pt.

Shawdaw, getting a basic reptile licence in most states is simply a matter of sending an application form in and paying a nominal fee. In my state an advanced licence is needed for certain species, which is a great system as it means beginners can’t get things like venomous snakes and lace monitors.

Despite Master Pt’s assertion that countries without any licencing systems being ’lucky’, I think the permit system is good for the welfare of the animals themselves. It reduces the number of reptiles taken from the wild, prevents impulse buying in petshops and makes sure delicate or potentially dangerous animals don’t get into the hands of the inexperienced, which ultimately becomes bad for everyone. People living in cities in the US in which large reptiles have been banned may understand the last point.

Sweden has very few native reptiles, so aside from a handful of species needing protection, there isn’t really a need for any kind of regulation concerning reptiles (until, of course, some beginners harm themselves or others with a species above their ability).

Thanks Crocdoc. I absolutely LOVE the idea of permits and licence. I wish they could implicate that here. But oh well. Definitely to many people here in the US that buy monitors cause they think there "cute."

dont get me wrong, all i say is we can have any reptile but in most cities you have to get a permit for snakes and its works pretty much the same way as you said crocdoc, when i said lucky i was thinking on how some people is`nt allowed to have this or that species cos the get to big or something, and as long there’s no permit for the keeping of dogs etc i really don`t see why one should need a permit for reptiles.

 Permits

Are dogs unlicenced where you live?

The need for a permit is for the welfare of the animals. For animals like reptiles, needing a permit to own one means people have to make a bit of effort or do a bit of research before purchasing one. That alone cuts out 99% of impulse buys.

When it comes to larger, trickier to keep and/or dangerous species, having a graded licence system means that rank beginners can’t get in over their head, causing problems for everyone.

Most people fear permits because they are worried about how it will affect them, no one ever thinks about how the animals are affected.

Is it V. tristis tristis you have there? At the moment I only have 1.2 V auffenbergi and 0.1 V tristis orientalis, but I´m getting 1.1 pb V. tristis tristis a week or two from now:-).

Best regards Thomas
