You can never tell from size the defenite age of a monitor. It sounds as though he is growing at a adequate rate if he has gained 2 and a half inch in under a month.Just keep feeding him up , if he is full he will refuse food.at 12" try something larger than a pinkie maybe move up to hoppers/fuzzies and make sure to give the locusts a dust with calcium.

hoppers are the size bellow fuzzies, they aint much bigger than a pinkie but have a little fur.you would be surprised at what he can fit in his mouth if its too big he will either refuse it or try to eat it and realise he cant.what you have said sounds fine just remember to keep offering him food till he stops so he can grow, i wouldnt worry about too much food intake till he’s bigger and older.offer an egg once a week as a treat and try giving him more hoppers rather than locusts.

in fact he looks rather slim in the pic i would definately try givin him more mice rather than insects they will fatten him up.its good for him not to be fat but you dont want him too skinny.as long as he has a good basking spot he should have no trouble digesting more mice, and get him on them daily.let me know how you get on with the hoppers/fuzzies.

as many as he will take, as i said dont worry about diet at the size he is just now he should be able to burn off and digest food no problem, with a good spot light.get him beefed up and just keep feeding him till he refuses if he does start to look too fat cut back on food.

do u use a spot lamp?
i use a ceramic heater.
how r u ment to keep the heat at night when u turn the lamp off?
also if i defrost 5 hoppers/fuzzies and he only eat 3, ive wasted 2.
so how many do u think he should have lookin at the pic and he’s head is only the size of my thumb.

thanks liam

I use 24 hour lighting, my monitors choose when they want to sleep.as long as you have a deep substrate and hides they should be fine with 24 hour lighting.this keeps the heat at the same temperature all the time.the viv must have a balanced temperature gradient so the monitor can escape the heat if he is too hot.if he has the ability to dig a burrow or a deep hide then it will be cooler in this area also and it will be dark.it is up to you if you want to keep ur ceramic heater this is only what works best for me.
as far as waisting mice is concerned , i dont have that problem as i keep more than one monitor if it isnt eaten by one it doesnt go to waste.you could defrost 2 and when he has eaten them wave a frozen mouse in front of him if he still seems interested you can defrost that one too.
p.s: make sure he doesnt get hold of the frozen one!
happy feeding
Ross

if you use a ceramic heater you don’t have to turn it off at night no light is coming from it. we leave ours on 24/7 and then use regular lights to illuminate the cage for our 12/12 schedual.

he does look a little under fed i would get him on fuzzies. you can also offer whole shrimp/egg/cut up cat fish.
