 Life expectancy?

I have a few questions. First, what is the life expectancy of argus monitors and ackie monitors? Second, what is a good incubater for a first time lizard breeder? This is all for future reference so don’t ask if I am breeding anything without knowing what I am doing.

probably 10 to 13 years for Argus, not sure for Ackies but probably similar or slightly shorter.

I am talking about if it had the temps perfect, the cage perfect, the works. How long are they supposed to live?

Who’s to say someones cage is perfect? Who’s to say if the temps. are perfect? I dont think anyone keeps there animals in ’perfect’ conditions. Unless you can provide the animal its natural habitat and range, then I would say there is no such thing as perfect.

Listen, all I wanted to know is how long is the animal supposed to live in captivity. If it dies at 5 years old then I know I did something wrong, if it dies at 10 years did I do something wrong? I know you can’t make "perfect conditions" Heres a better question, whats their lifespan?

That all depends on you and your care. I’ve heard of varanids living 20 + years in captivity. But who knows, many, many things can unexpectadly occur. So as to your answer, there is no exact answer that anyone can give you.

Could you give me an average? Like between 10-20 years, something like that.

Under good conditions, large monitors will live 20-35 years, depending on species. I know of Komodo dragons and lace monitors that have lived beyond this.

Small monitors like ackies can easily live 15 or more years. I know of someone with 15 year old brevicauda that are still breeding and going strong.

this happens to be an occurring trend. the first person gives a decent answer than almost everyone starts arguing for like 7 posts then some one answers again. sometimes we just get into the arguing right away. why?

It is called discussion. If you ask a question that has an exact answer or ask it in a way an answer can be given it also helps.

To leave the question up in the air as in this case, you are bound to get replies along those lines.

That is why i asked the question back to the poster, to answer him i needed to know where he was coming from. On average you’ll find the life expactancy is very low compared to the answers he was given. As was mentioned their life expactancy depends greatly upon support given. Sadly many people do not offer enough support to see their monitor get passed 5 years of age. So should we then have answered with that? should we answer with how long it has been stated they live in the wild? Or should we reply with abnormalities over achievers? etc.??

Working with something that is alive and constantly changing it is hard to give a definitive answer, as then the answer will not be able to in turn change. That is why you will not always be able to get a straight answer. Some people get mad and argue when they do not get that type of answer.

That is just my take on it. But anyways what does it matter? we all come here to discuss topics and talk and that certainly is what goes on.

life"span" .....yes, that is different. probably longer than my guesstimates as crocdoc alluded to. i was assuming a keeper who gives good to average care. a zoo may get closer to "span" than avg. keepers due to regular vet checks and good diet and supplementing and large enclosures, blah, blah, blah...they have more space and funding than most private keepers.
