Here are just a few ideas that may or may not work. You need to do something ASAP to lower the temperature.

Cut on the air condition. Put a fan blowing into the vent if available, of the enclosure. Cut back on the wattage of the heat light. Mist the enclosure with cool water and cut the heat light off at night. Change enclosures.

90F is around 32C. You have nothing to worry about. You don’t want a 90F cool end 24/7/365 but it will do your monitor no harm for a few days, even a couple of weeks.

Lethal temperature for an adult monitor is around 44C, a bit less for a young monitor. 36C is the temperature they try to get their body to when digesting food and generally being active (that’s close to 97F). 90F is quite a comfortable temperature for them

if basking temps are supposed to be 130+, then whats wrong with nighttime temps being 95? Pro Exotics keeps their lights on and temps up 24/7pro exotics

I wonder what the temperature of the cool side is during the day if the night temperature is 90. Since it is only May, it could very well get warmer as the summer continues. However, I do not know anything about weather in Michigan.

 Its too hot at night??

The hot season just ended where I live. For three months, my lowest temperature was 29°C (85°F) and my average high temperatures indoors went between 33°C and 34°C (91°F and 93°F). Outdoor average high temperatures during the hot season were much higher, from 37°C to 38°C (98°F to 100°F).

Unlike most people on this forum, I usually concentrate more on making sure my enclosures do not get too hot all of the year, rather than figuring how I can maintain higher temperatures. I do this primarily by placing all my heat producing lamps outside of the enclosures, turning the heat producing lamps off (on timers) during the hottest part of the day (12:00-15:00) and providing top-of-the enclosure ventilation. Heat producing lamps (basking lamps and mercury vapor lamps) are directed to basking spots, the focal point of the lamp heats the desired area, but because the lamp is outside, much of the heat it produces remains outside of the enclosure. Top-of-the-enclosure ventilation is not recommended in the US, because most of you have humidity issues to contend with (My high humidity reading for the reptile room yesterday was 86%- just from what outside exposure it receives).

My back up plan if it is too hot is air conditioning. Although the reptile room does not have air conditioning installed, the living room next to it does and there are a couple of small windows to allow the cooler air to enter. Something to remember about air conditioning: air conditioning not only cools the temperature, but dries out the air also! Luckily, I have not approached terminal temperatures for my snakes.

As crocdoc says, days or even a couple weeks of high temperatures will be OK. In my case a few months, but the methods I use should be discarded after temperatures start to cool, because when winter comes, you need to concentrate on keeping those temperatures higher.

Cheers,
Michael

 Its too hot at night??

I agree with Michael and have similar issues for part of the year (very hot room in which my monitors are). For the most part it doesn’t bother them, but we did have a day of 45C and that had both of my adult lace monitors sleeping in their water. It was at least 38C in my home.

As I said above, 32C is nothing for them (’cool’ end) and it only becomes an issue when the ’coolest’ part of the enclosure is above their preferred body temperature (around 36C or 98F) for very long periods.

All of my heat producing lamps, such as basking lamps, UV lights and ceramic heaters, have thermostats set near the floor. These act as ’kill’ switches, turning off all heat sources when the temperature near the floor gets above a certain level. The way I see it, if it’s that hot near the floor, it’s baking anywhere else.

You need to learn the difference between basking temperatures and ambient temperatures. A basking temperature of 130F is okay for a monitor, because it can walk away when it is hot enough. If the cool part of the enclosure reached 130F it would die in a short while.

o ok I get it. It isnt so bad to have a really hot basking temp as long as they can get away from it.

my house is 83*F all day and night in Florida. all lizard heat/lights cut off via timers at 8:00 pm. average daytime cool side reaches 90*F and the monitors don’t mind it at all. but i agree that the AC will dry out your cages, so you’ll have to mist frequently. i’m noticing this as the summer causes the AC to kick on more frequently vs winter/spring even though the cages are closed topped and have dirt/mulch substrate to retain h2o.

Easy fix. Give them the right substrate, make it deep and they will make thier own cool spot.
