After seeing crocdoc and master pt’s enclosures, i decline showing my cages. they are just boring 8 foot wooden boxes with wood platforms for basking. no contest. what are you guys making the rock walls out of? is it fast setting concrete over something. it couldn’t be solid concrete b/c it would be too heavy. dumgen. also has sculpted trees, etc made out of that same stuff. what is it, guys? b/c i’m ripping your zoo-quality a$$3$ off as soon as you tell me.

Crocdoc, how big is that enclosure and how big are your lacies? You and Master PT dominate on cage designs.

hey raze how deep is your dirt? from comparing the inside and out, it looks kinda like a foot deep. how much dirt do you need for an adult monitor?

I’d give your nile like 2-3 feet of dirt. But thats just me. As long as it can hold a good burrow and isn’t a muddy mess, it will work fine.

i wonder why no one makes a good commercial monitor cage. you’d think with the husbandry knowledge we have today that some company would put one out.
cheers

can you imagine the shipping cost on a 8x4x4 enclosure? it’d be WAY MORE to build one on your own

well, depending on the materials, and also would it be shipped assembled or would you have to construct it yoursepf? actually if it was made out of light durable material, and shipped broken down, the preice may be worth it.....but then again wheres the fun if you cant do it yourself?????

Thanks for the comments, guys. In answer to your questions, the lace monitor enclosure is 2.4 x. 2.4 x 1.2 metres. With industrial strength wheels underneath, it goes floor to ceiling. There’s a removal wood and glass partition in the centre.

The ’cliffs’ aren’t cement. I carved a model, made a mould and mother mould, then cast it out of a tough polyurethane elastomer that some companies use for mock rock work. Handfuls of sand and crushed sandstone were mixed with the elastomer, particularly on edges, for added effect.

As for the size of the animals, the last time I measured them was a fair while ago, but the female was 130 cm then and the male 165 cm. They’re bigger, now.

does she really use all 2 feet of it or just a few inches? my nile has about 7-8 inches right now but he only uses maybe 3 inches max of it. he really doesnt dig burrows, he just goes to sleep in his terra cotta potting plant that in to a hide/basking spot.

I have a water monitor at 22 inches right now. He’s seeemed so much happier now that he’s in the big 8 by 4 by 4 enclosure...spends most of his time in the water believe it or not...and occasonally goes to bask after meals. It seems as if he’s a bit less scared of me now as well...doesnt run when i walk into his cage to clean, give him food/etc...
his mud is at 5 inches but he’s still a youngin..is it still recommended to give 12+" of dirt for say a 3 month old baby?
