 Another gravid capra

All,
Just wanted to let you all know that I found another gravid capra in my tank. So that’s three! Doesn’t feel like too many, but we’ll see.

Nice! So, how long would you estimate before she’ll be ready to lay ’em? I’m asking because I have a feeling my dragon is about as far along as yours, give or take a week or two. Thanks! -Jeff

I am betting on about 1 1/2-2 weeks at most. The last one to lay for me was about a week in the separate tank before she did. It actually surprised me how soon she laid them. We are going to have grandchildren at the same time! (Well, mine are like twice removed or something, that or I just have a lot of kids.)

Crap. I was afraid of that. I’m heading out on tour one week from tomorrow, and I’ll be on the road a MONTH straight. I suppose I had better make sure she has a nesting area to at least lay the eggs. It seems to me she’d be egg-bound if she held them ’till I returned. Am I right?

This is not cool. My wife is going to drive to my office to feed the dragon every couple days, but she has made it clear she does not want to get involved in egg incubation. Ugh. -Jeff

I would imagine that, if the conditions are good enough in the cage, the eggs might do ok. Though the important thing if you can’t be there is her, not the eggs I think. So long as she can lay them, and not have trouble, you should be ok. I cannot say how the eggs will do though. I wish you the best. Are you heading out my way on your tour? Can I see you on any tv shows while you are out?

Thanks, Evan. I agree that the dragon takes precedent. No, I won’t be out your way, but yes, I will be on TV again--in Denver, on an NBC morning show. I’ll let you know if I do anything national.

My wife and I were talking earlier today about possibly visiting her family and friends in SF and Castro Valley this summer. If so, I say, "Road Trip to EBV!" I’ll keep you posted. My kids would love it. Me, too!

I hope to take pictures of my dragon and my revamped tank later this week. I’d appreciate feedback from you and everyone else. -Jeff

I should be free this summer. I don’t think I have any television interviews scheduled, though I am very much in demand. I’ll have my people contact you.

Oh, how cool you added to her tank! I will be waiting to see those!

Regards, Evan

congrats evan. Hey im wondering, how much will you sell one for. I might be interested. I would like to see what one would be like when it has nothing wrong with it. Shasta didnt move and inch today. I have to be doing something wrong. So when i figure that out i might get another one.

Chad,
Maybe we should go back over the basics?
Housing Size?
Tamps?
Humidity?
Water Source?
Food/Feeding?
Lighting?

Perhaps there is something wrong here. Your 150 watt bulb was way too much, did you change that?

I would love to sell you a baby, you and anyone else who wants one. I just don’t want to get anyones hopes up yet. I haven’t even had one hatch. And, of the 12 I got months ago, I only have 3 left. I have a total of 15 in there right now, with a few more on the way. I wish I could get babies, but we’ll see. This is my first time doing this, so I still am not even close to the level of Marcia, Bonnie or Steve. They’ve had tons of experience at this. I will definitely sell you one, or two or however many you want when and if they hatch and if they are healthy!

I have the right lighting, humidity, and housing size which leaves food, water and temps. My watersource is a waterfall but it gets cloged like every 3 days. and the big branch stops me from getting it out. I usually fedd him a few meal worms a day. I tried giving him meal worms on his own but didnt eat them but just kinda walked over them to a different part of the cage which took him to move about 15 minutes. And the temps are hard because my thermometers says it gets to about 85 but those gauges can be like 20 degrees low so i need to get a digital one.so i keep it where the thermometer says about 70 by turning the lamp on for awile then turning it off then putting a towel parcialy covering the top keeping the heat in.

I would get a Flukers digital thermometer and hydrometer. They are the same little thing. It has a digital display, and shows both the temps, and the humidity. What wattage bulb are you using?

You should get rid of the 150, get a 50 watt basking bulb. Don’t use the 150 for now. That is probably why he is acting weird. That is unimaginably hot to him. Really, don’t even turn it on anymore. It is really dangerous to him. If nothing else, for now, use a normal 50-60watt room light bulb. Just don’t use the 150 anymore. And get yourself a 50 watt basking bulb. (Even a 25 wouldn’t be bad.)

You can use a regular household bulb for basking. It’s alot cheaper and works just fine.

I definately agree with Bonnie. I have a 10 gallon tank right now I’m using until I can get some plexiglass (I cannon keep good humidity with the dry conditions in our house using a screen front on my larger enclosure) and I have a 40w house bulb. It keeps that 10 gallon at about 85F and heats it up pretty quick.
