What type of MHD do I have????

Hi,
On the weekend my husband came home with this cute little lizard, I know she is a MHD I am just not sure which type. She had been in a viv with a male and she has 2 rub marks on the back of her head that may possibly have been horns but I am not sure. They said she ate 3 crickets a day but really it’s like 6-12 depending on her mood.
We noticed tonight she is rubbing her head all over the glass in the viv, not sure if that is a normal behavior.

This is Bella we are not sure how old she is but she is 10.5" from snout to tail. (I think thats full size) I hope my pic shows up lol.

You have a capra. She looks full grown. Her horns are missing and her neck does look like there’s been some mating (or fighting going on). I have a female with spikes bent and missing from mating.

The rubbing On the glass is because she doesn’t know glass and thinks she can get out. You may want to cover the bottom so she isn’t apt to continue this. Could cause sores on her snout.

I would feed her more than just crickets. They love worms (nightcrawlers or wigglers) You can get them at most pet shops now. Any kind of larva--mealworms, superworms, silkworms, phoenix worms, but keep wax worms as a treat or to fatten up after laying. Hornworms, silkworms, and phoenix worms are high in calcium but rather expensive.

What type of MHD do I have????

Thanks Bonnie!
I thought she was but I was really not sure.
I have a bearded dragon too and he was my fisrt lizard but I did research for 3 moths before I bought him lol. I didnt really have time to research this one lol.

We tried her with superworms, mealworms, silkworms and she wont touch any of them. The guy at the pet store said she ate 3 crickets a day and that she was very picky. Well the good thing is she eats more then that but only that. Have not tried her with a reglar worm yet though, so I wil do that.

Do you happen to know if those horns wil come back or are they just gone now?

Also the rubbing on the glass is almost like she is dancing (sounds stupid) but she makes the same move over and over and I am not sure what the heck she is doing but it’s more then just rubbing to her I think lol.

Thanks again
Carrie

Ummmmmmm.........................
I just thought of another thing if she was in with a male do you think there is a chance they may have mated????
I am kinda hoping they didn’t just cause I would have NO clue what the heck to do in that situation lol.
and is there anything I should watch for just in case? other then eggs.

If she was in with a male there is a good chance she’s gravid. My females EAT like crazy when they start to get fat looking. Anything and everything. Go to Froggie B and read up on the gravid part. Marcia helped me when I first got into these. I didn’t properly do my research either. Just couldn’t resist them.

We have a local breeder of hornworms. If you can get just a couple you may want to try those. (Don’t use the wild ones that feed off tomato plants. They are toxic) The green color seems arrestable to them.

What type of MHD do I have????

We tried to get her worms such as night crawlers etc but we live in a small town and due to the fact it’s winter no one carries them.
She had no interest in meal worms at all, superworms made her run to the far end of the viv and not come out till they were gone lol, and she wouldnt touch a silk worm either. crickets are all we can get her to eat with any sucess at all. we are still looking for worms but not sure that will be possible.
Horn worms are sometimes very hard to get as well but when the pet store has them, I do buy them my bd LOVES them, so I will try her with them too the only problem is they are over $3.00 a worm and I could not afford to give them as more then a treat.

Another question I have is she is sleeping in her water she will stay their all night and quite a bit of the morning, is this normal? She has done it 4 nights in a row now.

Just wanted to say thanks again, I did read that fact sheet several times, and I am sure I will read it several more lol. Not quite as many people own a MHD as they do BD, so the info is not quite as available when you go to see if someone elses may be doing what yours is lol.

Mine will sometimes sleep in the water. Soaking is not a bad thing. Especially in the dry winter months. (I’m in Detroit. It’s 9 degrees right now with a stiff wind. Brrr.) They will also soak before laying eggs. If she starts digging she’s getting ready to lay.

What type of MHD do I have????

Well Bella is digging a big hole and is in the water for long periods but she does not feel like she has anything egg like in her belly, I thought I read somewhere you would feel them. Gee now I am kinda scared.
I am in Canada in a little town called Arnprior (just outside Ottawa) and it’s -11 so cold lol with lots of wind. (she is nice and warm though)
We found a store that has worms so we are going to pick them up tomorrow and see what she thinks of them, again tonight she will only look at crickets and even then she does not seem to excited.
Thanks again for the help, cause I can tell you as a new pet owner it makes you feel much better to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about.

What type of MHD do I have????

Forgot to say no the horns won’t grow back.

If she’s digging then she’s probably going to lay. With Juniors last clutch I didn’t realize she was gravid. She was a bit fat but I couldn’t feel eggs either. After she laid it looked like they weren’t fertile. They were small and discolored. Out of 15 there are still 2 in the incubator but I don’t believe there is anything in them. I’ve had eggs go the full 6 months and not be fertile. Conditions were just right to keep the going I guess. I have also candled eggs that I thought were empty and hatched little ones. Go figure.

It’s pretty cold and windy here to but supposed to get in the 20’s in a couple of days.

What type of MHD do I have????

Well I am happy to report Bella ate a worm today yippie.
A regular worm, meal worm and a cricket. so she ate a variet today lol.
Well I am going to watch for the possibilty of the the egg thing and deal with it if it happens, You may get a post that screams help lol.
From the reading I have done on it the whole egg process seems to take a while from start to hatching so we shall see. The problem is not knowing where she came from before the pet store.
or how long she was in with the male.

Thanks so much for all your help, I am sure it wont be the last time lol
