 New Distribution info: A. lepidogaster

Here are some pictures of Acanthosaura lepidogaster taken last year in two locations in Khao Yai National Park, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. This represents new geographical distribution data and the southeastern most extent of its range in Thailand by over 350km.
For reference:

That would have really been a find if it was Acanthosaura coronata! Although Cambodia is not terribly far from Khao Yai National Park, they are found in the opposite corner of Cambodia away from where Khao Yai National Park is closest to Cambodia; the finds were almost 200km from the Cambodian border. At around the same time I found the Acanthosaura far to the southeast of where its known range was, I also found Physignathus far to the northwest of where its continuous range is.

In Stuart, B.; Sok, K. & Neang, T. 2006. A collection of amphibians and reptiles from hilly Eastern Cambodia. Raffl. Bull. Zool. 54 (1): 129-155, they make a strong argument for separation of A. coronata from A. lepidogaster, but it has not been fully accepted. The reason for this is: Hallermann, J. 2000. The taxonomic status of Acanthosaura fruhstorferi Werner, 1904 and Calotes brevipes Werner, 1904 (Squamata: Agamidae). Mitt. Mus. Naturk. Berl., Zool. Reihe, 76 (1): 143-150.

Here is an independent comment (not from Jakob Hallermann) that was made of Stuart, Sok & Neang (2006):

Quote:

STUART et al. (2006) state that A. coronata should be removed from the synonymy of A lepidogaster because both species are morphologically distinct. However, Stuart et al. do not provide any diagnostic characters

From your pictures, I would guess that it is the variation from Vietnam?

Cheers,
Michael
