 Back from vacation: Not happy

The family and I went on vacation for about 10 days recently. I took the bird and my MHD to the Bird and Reptile store where I purchased them to be boarded because I didn’t trust anyone to care for Joker (MHD) properly (he’s just a little spoiled.) I’ve only had him for about a month and I think the stress may have been very bad for him.

When I picked him up he puffed up and opened his mouth at me, which he has never done before. He’s always been very sweet. I don’t think that he had enough water, his waterfall seemed to be close to running dry. They fed him 2 earthworms every other day. At home he generally eats that much every day. Funny that they took such poor care of him. They take great care of the bird.

Now that he’s home I notice that he is darker in color (not happy) and tends to be a liitle more lethargic, resting his head on the vine rather than lifting it up. I have made sure to keep the humidity up and yesterday he was drinking from his waterfall. He ate 3 earthworms yesterday so that made me feel better. The place only sells captive bred, and he was in a separate home from the other critters, so I don’t think the problem is parasites. He’s just not happy. When he’s happy he’s green.

Any suggestions? I want my old joker back.

aaaaaa from what I hear,Your MHD seems...well...not good. Was he in HIS enclosure, or a different one. When you move them, it tends to stress them out more...2 earthworms every other day is normal. I think the people in which he taken care of handeld him, when he was not used to being handled by them, which caused him to flare out at you. Or they did not handle him properly. To stop him flaring out at you, keep visiting with him gradually, unitl he seems to lighten up a bit, and warm up to you again. You are doing well with the humidity, just make sure everything is as it should be and he should be back to normal within a short time.

Good Luck

My first question is the same was he in HIS enclosure or one of theres ... if he was in one of theirs it could be that he picked something up from the enclosure he was in may not have been sterilized properly. I hope hes doing better soon.

He was in one of their enclosures. I just don’t think he likes the change, and the atmosphere was too busy for him. After a day or two of moping at home looking brown (we just left him alone and made sure he had plenty of water), he’s back to happily eating his trout worms and is looking green again.

Crickets are a waste for him. They just sit on his head.

Next time we go away I’ll have some one come in to take care of him. He obviously doesn’t like change. He does like the way we spoil him though.

I’m glad to hear he’s doing better.
Being in one of THEIR enclosures I’m sure was the reason why he was acting up..
