 Won’t eat/won’t stay awake

Hey everyone,

I’ve had my MHD for almost 3 years now; his name is Charlie. Anyways, every so often I feed Charlie a superworm, earthworm, or various other smaller worms from the local pet shop, but i usually stick with crickets. At the beginning of the week I fed Charlie two superworms, but noticed the next day that he had vomited them up. He has moved from his usual high spot perch and is now staying on the lower vines or on the ground. I realize MHDs spend most of their time sleeping and perching, but Charlie can seriously not stay awake now (this started occurring over the past 3 days). Today, I was trying to wake him up/get his interest in food by misting him and he woke up for mere seconds before starting to fall back into sleep. I misted him a second time, and he displayed at me and opened his mouth....so I placed a smaller cricket in the front of his mouth and he actually fell asleep with the cricket in his mouth. Also, when he does wake up he appears to be delirious; looking all around and moving very clumsily. VERY ODD. Any ideas of what his problem could be?

Oh, he has been drinking water straight from my sprayer bottle though. I mist him and he slurps up whatever water has accumulated on his face.

i am no expert but why not take him to a herp vet? i would be really worried if that was my lizard, and i dont know if you’ll get any responses any time soon since it kinda seems that many people dont get on this forum now. so dont take your chances and wait, go straight to the vet...

I would take him to the vet. It could be parasites that are eating up all his nutrients which is why he’s so tired. Also, have you tried turning up the temp? What is it at now?

Thanks for your help guys. I actually found the one local herp vet in town this morning and took him there. They weren’t positive if it was parasites, but gave me some panacal (sp) to give him every 2-3 hours. Anyways, I gave that to him and bathed him in the electrolyte formula, I regularly mix in his water, for the rest of today.

Charlie passed away tonight. :( He was a great little guy. Almost 6; he was 3 when I bought him from his original owner.

Still not completely sure what the cause was. It happened quite fast; starting with the incident when he vomited the superworms.

Panacur is a strong med for parasites. I am surprised that you were advised to give more than one dose daily, maybe the vet was thinking that you wouldn’t get it in? Never heard of that high of a dosage. That is what I am suspecting is the cause of death, sorry. RIP Charlie, I am so sorry.
