Soon I will have some MHD

Hi everyone. I just discovered MHD and I am doing the research to get a pair by June when the Reptile show comes to San Diego. I do have some Water Dragons already and me and my husband made them a cool set up. Now we want to make something for the MHD’s. I know that they like running water. So I was thinking about making a pondless waterfall for them. Has any one ever done this in side the house? I thought instead of making the bottom a fish tank, I could make a box and fill it with a pondless waterfall for them. It sounds great in my head but may be completely unrealistic. So if any one has tried it, I would love to know what the results were. Any other advise on things to have ready for them would be highly appreciated.
This is my WD set up.

Hi Neffmom_dad,

That’s great your getting a couple of MHD’s..... I just got two myself.. and getting one from a friend...I already have 9 CWD’s & 6 iggys and soon 3 Aussie dragons and 2 beardies..

Not sure about the pondless waterfall I’ve been trying to do a lot of research on them but can’t find a whole lot.....and there’s not to many memebers on here...I know they like to swim and like water..their temps and humidity levels are a little different from the WD’s..Here’s a great website that I did find a long time ago.....
FroggieB
Here’s what I did find at froggieb’s

Quote:

MHDs must be provided with a large area of moving water where they can drink and swim. They will not pay attention to water unless it is moving, therefore there should be a pump/filter combination, a waterfall, or at the very least an air stone to keep the water moving. A waterfall system or a stream is the best type of "water bowl" for MHDs but requires more maintenance than a simple air stone.

That is an incredibly awesome water dragon setup, you guys should be very proud of making that!!!
Something similar for MHD’s would result in you having some extremely happy and lucky MHD’s! LOVE IT!
The froggie b website is BY FAR the best and most accurate info you will find on them and their care. The website was done by a lady named Marcia, and she also wrote the article about them in Reptiles magazine some years ago when the issue was about MHD’s. She used to post advice on here, but she had another business to run and had to find all of her MHD’s new homes to concentrate on that:( But you shoud look back over some of the older postings, from when this forum was a little more busy, for some good advice and pictures of other’s setups. Oh! If you go down to a post from 8/8/07 by "mrcota", he took pictures in Thailand of wild MHD’s and their native habitats and was freakin awesome enough to post them on here. If it doesn’t give you any ideas for setups, it is really neat to see at least!
As for my cage,

I only use a large water pan, which is actually a cat litter pan, with some fake branches to climb out on and an airstone in it to make the water bubble and keep the humidity up. So, my only feedback and advice to your question is that you DO want to have standing water that they can actually sit in and drink from, as they do not prefer to lick water the way anoles and such do, but they stick their faces in it and drink deeply, at least in my experience! (I have four MHD’s now that I’ve had everywhere from 3 to 6 years...) If you had a waterfall going into the water that would be really cool, it would really help keep the humidity up, and look awesome, and the MHD’s would probably really like the natural way it would make the standing water move. Whatever you use for the bottom, just give them lots of branches in the top, they like to be up high. They pretty much only come to the ground to eat, poop, and drink and soak. Oh, and to lay eggs!

From the looks of your CWD setup, I am quite sure you will construct something creative and rad for them, and I look forward to seeing pictures in the future?!
I hope that helps, and sorry, i tend to get carried away and post kinda long...

You sound like me Annie when you were naming all of your guys:) Thank you for the Froggie B info. It has been hard to get the info I would like. We have been working on our WD cage and added a RIVER. My husbands idea and the dragons love it. I will post pics up in the WD post when it is done.
Love what you did with you MHD set up Deri. After what you told me I think I am going to do something like the WD cage. I will probably make a cool river that turns into a waterfall into a pond. Good thing we have a few months to figure that one out, lol.
Was that the first time they laid eggs? Or have you had babies before? I would LOVE to see pictures of hatchlings. You MHD’s are SO beautiful. I can not wait until I have a pair. I will put some pics up as soon as it is all put together and then again when I get my MHD’s.
Thanks
Brandi

Ya, it feels good to know I am not the only one who fills my house with animals,LOL.
I live in an apartment or I would have a lot more.
We just changed it around. Chris,my hubby, built a box so I can fill it with dirt for them and we placed it on the bottom for them and then a shelf on the top. I will post it in the WD post soon.
We have four kids (Adriana, Skyler, Ashton, and Logan)
A dog named Shooter
Three WD’s (Megatron, Pandora and Leelu)
A rosy boa named Lyra
A russian tortoise named king
A tarantula named Alvin
A black widow
A brown widow
and soon a couple of MHD

We live in San Diego (Lakeside). We have to make sure we bring cash only when we go to the reptile show or who knows what we will bring home. It is not that hard for me to get what I want from my hubby and I know I will want it all. I have never been to one, I am soooooo excited. I would realy love an Aussie so I might come home with one if I can find them, lol.

Wow, you both have some VERY cool lizards and pets!! Annie, I cannot imagine having that many iggies and water dragons! And Brandi, I hope for my first snake to be a rosy boa, they are gorgeous! My dad was very tolerant of all I brought home, just "NO SNAKE, or they all go!". You both rock for loving herps that much!!
I am a manager at a pet store and they (coorperate) make us sell iguanas (and irridescent sharks and pacus and pirhannas...) and the only control I have over it is trying to make sure they go to good, well informed homes. It is absolutley nuts the amount of people who buy the iggies b/c they are inexpensive and they (think) they know what they are. The lizard is the cheapest thing, and they are so often not willing to buy the things they need. A man called us the other day asking if we had them, and before he hung up, he said, and I quote, "oh, and what do they eat, just leaves, right?" I gently let him know the importance and specifics of their actual diet, and we give out a packet that I made, since coorperate doesn’t really provide us with anything useful, when we sell them about all their care, but we can only do so much when people see pets as just a disposable unfeeling animal.
Also we had five people come in last summer asking what iguanas needed because they had WON THEM AT A CARNIVAL:(( and didn’t know a thing about them. I was like, they may as well have given away a stinkin alligator!
Anyways, it makes me sad, but it makes me equally as happy when I get to see and hear about people that truly love them and care about them!
If I may, I will share my pets too??
I have:
4 MHD’s, Arby, Spike, Penny, and Homer, RIP my Marla 2 months ago:(
most everyone else does have names but I won’t list them all
1 golden gecko
1 male green basilisk
3 leopard geckos
1 african fat tail gecko
3 white’s tree frogs
1 cuban tree frog
1 reed tree frog
1 crested gecko
3 leopard frogs
1 gray tree frog
1 green tree frog
1 squirrel tree frog
4 rice paddy frogs
2 red and black walking frogs
2 green toads
a fatty african clawed frog
2 dogs, a schnauzer/terrier mix, and the canine love of my life, Maggie
and an almost 2 year old german shepherd, tre
And 5 fish large freshwater fish tanks!
And a wonderful fiance, that sorta counts:)

No kids and no snakes yet, but hopefully they will both be in the near future!
deri :)

Oh, and Brandi, if you make a pond for th MHD setup, I would say don’t make it too deep, they don’t like to swim like water dragons do, they are more of a chillin in the water and soakin kind of lizard.

WOW you have a lot as well. I love frogs. I use to have a tank full of tree frogs but I am not good at keeping up with the humidity and keeping it as clean as I want. I think I might of had to many in one enclosure or maybe the wrong things in there because it would always grow mushrooms. That was years ago when I was a teen though. I would love to get some poison dart frogs some day.
