Lifespan question
There is one thing I dont know and quite concerns me. Sera was wc as an adult. She has had 2 other owners. Her first had her a year and couldnt keep her, an individual that took in rescues had her for about 6 months and then me, so she’s been in captivity atleast 2 1/2 years as an adult. Everything about how she acts and looks is very much like she was when I got her and she still eats very well too (but only worms...I do gutload-refuses crickets) . My concern is everything Ive read shows they live 3 to 5 years. She would fall into the range. Do they shows signs of aging? What should I expect, or will she just suddenly go? I have lots of reptiles, but aside an old turtle, Ive never had any that were seniors. |

I also knew nothing about them when we’d get them in at the pet store where I work, and we lost a few before I started researching and keeping them myself. Ours all come in wild caught and in pretty poor and stressed shape, it’s so cool to be able to take care of them properly and get them good homes! I love being able to help them since their care unfortunately isn’t well enough known for them all to make it to good homes! Here is my experience with age so far: I have 4 right now. The only one I have lost since keeping them is my female, Marla. She was gravid when I got her, so she was at least 18 months old. She layed eggs every year that I had her, I got her in 2005 and she passed away in January of this year, so she was around six years old I guess. She had complications with laying the last time, I think she was older and it took too much out of her, she passed away shortly after laying her eggs. I have one male now who is about 5 years old, I got him when he was around 9 months old, and he is starting to eat less, he seems a bit "haggard" I guess, he just looks like he’s feelin kinda old now, not so young and spry and alert. And then I have two other males and a female, all of who are anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 years old, and they are all as active and hungry as they’ve always been. Out of those, two will eat anything, but my biggest male will also only at nightcrawlers, and he is fat and happy on just those. That is just my experience so far with their aging, I think as they get older, eating less and being less active, (not that they are super active to begin with!) might be a good sign that they are feeling their age, but I would also be interested to hear other peoples experience with this!? deri |
