 New A. crucigera

I just bought a new mhd from a local pet store. They said he is A. crucigera. Not sure if it a boy or girl??
but he is pretty feisty. At the pet store he would puff out his neck and try to bite, but now that he is home he seems to have relaxed a little. Is it hard to tame them? All of my other mhds were always nice, so this is the first mean one i’ve encountered. Also, how is he looking?

Thanks for the help,
Sara

Very pretty. I just posted some of my temporary cage till I get a tall terrarium. Do u know much about the species?

They need a source of water that has air going in it and high humidity and low temps like 75-85.. etc.
You can check out the pics I put up. I researched this species. I would also get a poop smaple in to vet to make sure their is no festation of parasites. Thats a must.

Good luck with him! He is very pretty. Looks like a semi adult. Also Male. The hump after his back legs show its a male.

Yeah, I have a big filter in his water that pours out water like a waterfall. he has been sitting on a rock under the waterfall all day pretty much. the closest reptile vet is 3 hours away, but I’m going to try to go ASAP. he is a 75 gallon with another female right now. they have plenty of room, but i’ll probably start working on a vertical tank for them soon.

Ok well that sounds good but I would def take him out. He will breed with her. He looks mature enough.

Well she is an A. Capra and ive never heard of any interbreeding going on. Probably because of the size difference she is about 5 inches bigger than him anyways.

i mean it’s your decision, but i probably wouldn’t if he was sick. since i don’t live close to a vet i know a reptile specialist who can tell me if the mhd at the pet store i live by is healthy or not. My experiences with buying sick ones -- usually they are too stressed out and just beyond the point of helping. I bought a sick one once and it hadn’t been eating or anything and a day or two after i got it, it wouldn’t even sit up and i spent a week syringing gatorade and pedialyte down it’s throat every few hours of the night and it died. so, i haven’t bought any sick ones since lol.

I have a simular story. I bought an adult and didnt know much about the species or anything. I bought her and she got too stressed. I didnt know they needed so much humidity and "running" water...etc etc... So she didnt last long. This one is actually doing pretty good. He is alert. I havent had much success with food yet, but he did poop and I took it str8 to vet this morning. I ran him a warm dish in the sink also. So he is very hydrated today. I have offered him some earthworms I bought and small crix. He doesnt want them. I leave them though. They say they are secretive. so Ill check on him later. I will be getting his tall mesh cage soon. Other than that I cant stress too much. I aso have 2 beardies and thier lives are totally opposite! So its different for sure. Good luck with yours and I hope we keep in touch! I dont know anyone who has a mhd. lol. Can u post a pic up of ur other one?

Thx, Lauren

The way i have my tank set up is on the bottom i have a few inches of water..enough for them to swim in and i have rocks and plants in it..with the filter creating a waterfall onto the rocks..then i have tons of tree limbs and plants and vines and everything above it for them to climb on..its pretty much like a miniature jungle. i was thinking about also getting a fogger to put in there.

my big girl, athena, stays in the water almost all day. sometimes i even see her try to eat bubbles that are created by the waterfall lol. she’s 15 inches and a total fatty. she eats everything. she laid eggs once, but i haven’t tried to mate her she just came into the pet store pregnant. She’s pretty ordinary looking other than that, just some nice yellow on the horns and the chin.

The other guy I have is Ares.

so, i have three. here is a picture of the one that didn’t make it.

right now I have 13 mhd eggs incubating, so i hope they hatch. I bought a pregnant female from the pet store and she laid eggs 2 days after i got her home. She died after laying them though, so hopefully the eggs will hatch to make it all worth her while. i also have 4 bearded dragons that i’m hoping to breed this year :)

Wow, u sound like me. I love beardies and MHD. Your female looks just like my girl "Crazy" we called her. She was healthy but it was my fault she died. I will never forgive myself so I know this go around has to really be worth it. I want to make sure this lil guy lives. The petstores could care less about them.

The last pic of the MHD was a cutie but u could tell she was sick. The tail was so slinder and just looked sick. Poor thing. I bet she died b/c of egg issues. The eggs probly took to much calcium away from her so she died. Man sorry to hear. But, u look like you are triving! Good for you!! I want a couple MHD’s myself. If I can get this one thriving, I might get the other one if he is still there. He did look sick but al I need is to give him some dewormer and get his habitat right. They dont even have dripping water or anything. They leave the crix in there so you know they are eating at them. They are babies!

What do you have the most luck with in feeding your guys? I bought earthworms like I said but he hasnt gone for them. Also small crix. We will see...

my athena has eaten earth worms but she doesnt like them so much. mine mostly like crickets, dubia roaches, and super worms. i breed super worms so i feed the tiny little baby super worms to my little guys and then the big ones to athena. they always bit down on them and let them squirm in their mouth for a few seconds before chewing them up, it’s so funny. they will also eat meal worms too. i havent tried anything else.

Well Im kind of letting him get adjusted. He didnt move for a couple days. I moved him around, now he has moved a couple times today. I put a small worm on a leaf beside him and walked away. When I came back he was across the cage on a branch and the ground had been dug up. lol so I guess he got it. It makes me happy to see this species thrive. I hear they arent the easiest... Or maybe some people just dont understand them. They reallydont look like rainforest type lizards until u see them in the right habitat u know?

I miss my other one "Crazy" as we called her. B/c she was craazzy!!

Ilike your water on the bottom part idea. I never thought of that. Do you have something where they climb up high? They lived in the mountains up high thats crazy!

yup, i have lots of branches, vines, and plants growing in there. plus i have one of those green reptile hammock things. they most like to swim in the water during the day then climb up to dry off towards night time and go to sleep. they are all hand fed..they are so spoiled. :)

Hey Sarabellum-

Ok so I went to vet and they gave me some meds to treat his worms.
I have offered him small roaches, he let them go right over him. Earthworms he doesnt seem to care for. I think he might have eatin one, not sure though. Im guessing cuz he has worms, he doesnt feel all that great. I have tried dangling a worm in his face, closes eyes. So I just leave him be after I feed him. He does move around though. And his eyes are alert.
What do you think on how to help his eating thing. At least I need to get him going right? ... sorry not trying to hijack ur post, u just seem to answer in here. lol

Thanks

lol it’s ok..i don’t mind at all.

umm when i first bring mine home sometimes they are just too stressed out and wont eat for a week or two. Athena didn’t eat for two weeks. The guy I just bought in this post just started eating yesterday and he ate 3 crickets and 3 smaller superworms. You could always mix some gatorade + mashed up crickets into a paste and syringe it down his throat if you are really worried. otherwise, i would probably see how things go. since he has worms he might just be a little stressed out and once the medicine gets rid of them then he will probably be more willing to eat.

Ok. I was reading on them and found a good care sheet. I will make a paste tomorrow and give him some. Reguardless if he is eating, it wont hurt. He is just so little. Only 12 grams. So I want to make sure he is well fed thorughout his medication process. I dont know if you have heard of Acidpholiz (spelling sorry) but it helps thier gut flora or digestive tract. So I gave him some and will continue while I dose with meds. He seems ok I just want to make sure he eats. lol

Thanks for the help!
Lauren

sounds good. i hope he is alright. from my experience, it seems hard to keep pet store mhds healthy. I was feeding one crickets at the pet store today, she was so fat. i was glad to see that they got in one that was that well off. i hope i find some nice ones at the expo in may. last year i purchased two A. armatas and they were BEAUTIFUL. unfortunately they seizured and died the FOLLOWING DAY. I have yet to find out who the breeder was because i picked up the wrong card at the booth i bought him from. the vet told me there were serious genetic problems wrong with it and i needed to contact the breeder and let him know. i’ll send pictures of them tomorrow though, they were amazing..
