Thanks for the info. So far I’ve fed him cabbage, blueberries, kabocha, cucumber, melon, carrots, green beans, mealworms, crickets and pinkies. At the pet shop where I bought it, they never offered it veggies, they even confessed that they new nothing whatsoever on the species. They told me it had not grown there, but it gained a full 4 inches since I bought it three weeks ago.

Any good link, book recommendation etc. would be greatly appreciated. I’ve reposted a pic below.

Thanks. I knew this one, the green background is tiring indeed. Funny the background and fonts colours people use when building websites, not thinking of the readers. I yet have to see a best seller printed in white font on a black background lol.

My little starter site is green too, but not like that!
I thought Green was supposed to be calming????

That site is the only half decent one I’ve found. WH What sex is your plated? I’m 90% sure mine are both females after seeing a pic of my friends males "bits" The pores on his are bright orange!!!!

Frankly, I’ve got no idea whether it’s a male or female. And I don’t personally know anyone who owns one, they are rare in Japan.

I have one and it’s a girl. I have heard that the female’s are shy, timmid, and will run off when you open the cage or try to take them out. The male’s are the opposite, they try to escape their cage when you open it, and they will (I’ve heard) try to crawl up your arm when you stick it in.

 Giant Plated Lizard

I am a novice lizard owner ( due to cat allergies, I had to get creative with an indoor pet for my 5 year old who loves lizards). I must say I have fallen in love with my $18 plated lizard ( named Kitty Colbert by the 5 year old). But I am absolutely ignorant about the amount of handling and freedom I can give this new family member. I am intrigued by the exquisite diet you provide! Do new foods need to be integrated slowly? I don’t even know their frequency of bowel movements or how to check for his general health. I want to be as hands on as possible, but I have a fear of handling him too much. In essence, how much LOVE can I give this poor critter who finds himself in a home of a clueless owner? I do feed him the requisite crickets, pinkies and cucumbers( a veg you didn’t mention). But I want him to "lead a full life" in my home. How often do you handle yours and what are the parameters of life for this guy? He seems to have a good "personality" and seems to need a little more? Thx, Paula

I think I have one too. This lady gave it to me, she said it was a sadi arabian lizard? I looked that up. never found anything. So I found this place. And I think it is a giant! She has kids and the kids held it with a towel because of the ruffness. They said it was 8 yrs old. So I’m here to learn. Read lots here. Hope to read more! I took this thing because I raise crickets for my lepard gekco. So she thought I could take care of it! Good luck HUH?

well how u can tell if its a giant plated lizard is the size of the lizard is it over 2 feet long giants get up to 3 ft so u better have at least a 5 foot tank for him/her and temps shouldb be around 90-100 basking and 75 80 on the cool end also make sure u ahve a water bowl big enough to soak in you need at least 6 inches of substrate for him/her to dig in and plants and hides for him/her to feel safe if u have all this ure good to go and also offer fruit and other things other than crix like meal worms super worms and pinkies (live mice are a no no)

Well this thing is 16 inches it’s got a large mid size. I thought it could be a african plated, but it’s larger then the picutres I have seen. If I can get one of my boys to figure out whats up with my cord to down load my pictures, I’ll do it soon! and post it. I did get a basking light for him???
and he has a log to go under but the other things I’m going over to petco to pick up some more stuff. Oh ya I put in some reptibark! He got some pineapple and lettuce He liked it. plus the crickets. he already had a heat rock. those are dumb huh? I would think it would be hot enought with the light. there was also a heating pad? I’ll pick up a temp gage.
Thanks for the info. look for my pic soon!

you probably cant tell by size unless its fullgrown... you can tell by color and pattern, go google em, lol, you can compare others to yours, you should be able to tell after a little while

Ya I’m still gonna go with Sudan plated.....butI have seen some that are just solid color. I don’t think it is a giant. He’s 8 years old. he’s or she is just wider then most. I saw a Giant plated online last night he was pretty big. Hope to see more pictures of other plateds soon! Anysone else have them? He’s new to me. So I would like to keep intouch with others so incase i need help someday. Barney is doing good! we were playing peeka boo last night. his cage is next to me by the computer, he watches me So I put my hand in front of him and he peeked over it! Funny huh? My grandaughter thinks it’s funny, she’s 5.
Take care

 Giant Plated Lizard

just looked at this post and thought that i would clarify one thing. the lizard in the picture that i can see is not a giant plated lizard but is either a Sudan plated lizard or possibly a black-lined plated lizard (gerrhosaurus nigrolineatus). a true giant plated lizard (gerrhosaurus validus) looks a lot different.

if you are interested in seeing the difference i have a post a ways down the list titled "Identification" which has pictures of three of my plated lizards in which you can clearly see the difference. i finally did more research after getting the correct scientific names and was able to find information much easier.

i am not trying to sound condescending or anything but there is a lot of misinformation out there and i figured i would try to clarify a little of it and make it less of a problem.
