Plated Lizard Dilema (sorta long) newbie
4 years ago I bought a plated lizard from a guy who said he had bred them and its (his) mate died. He said the lizard was depressed and needed a new scene. So I took in the little guy. Well all I was told was that he was a male African Plated lizard. I also was told he only ate yellow squash. I have to admit I had poor judgment and I put him in with another reptile of mine who ate crickets. I learned right away that my little guy LOVED crickets and apparently hates squash. Anyway for a while he would only come out to eat and probably for the first 2 months I barely saw him. Slowly he came to life and I decided I liked him so much that I would try and replace his mate. So I began my search. I asked around at all of my local pet shops and put adds in my local papers (I did not know about Kingsnake.com at the time). for the last 4 years I’ve searched for a mate for him and until this past month I came up short. I actually gave up for about a year until I walked in to a foreign (out of town) Petco and saw a sign "African Plated Lizards" HA! YEAH RIGHT! Those things have stripes I thought to myself. "Hmmm.. maybe they are girls" My thought process continued. So I asked a store clerk who informed me that there are many types of African plated lizards and if mine wasn’t colorful then it wasn’t the same kind. Well that evening I went home to look up my lizard and after a good hour of searching I determined I had a Sudan/African plated lizard. Skipping ahead a bit: Finally one day I found Kingsnake.com I found a guy selling plated lizards and I sent him an e-mail asking if he had a female "African/Sudan" Plated lizard. To my surprise he did and 2 days later my Lizard Arrived. To my dismay I opened my box to find *sigh* that dang striped thing I’d seen in the pet store (no harm meant). Of course you can understand my disappointment. So I sent the seller an e-mail and after a few short conversations he told me to keep my striped lizard and he would track down a Sudan Plated Lizard for me and send it free of charge. A week later I got the call my lizard was in and 2 days later it arrived. YAY.. One very cold, very lonely brownish Sudan plated lizard... Until just a few moments ago I was very happy about the arrival of my lizard. That is until I found this website. After looking over various things and doing some more research on the internet it has become apparent that my male lizard is not a Sudan. Instead he is a black lined (with yellow tipped scales) plated lizard. *sigh* so now, here I am with 3 different kinds of plated lizards! :( I don’t really know what to do. Can Sudans and Black Lined lizards breed? Should I keep them separate from the yellow striped? Also my black Lined is HUGE compared to the descriptions I’ve found, I mean nearly monitor size. I’d say 2 1/2 feet and very thick. The sudan is about 1 1/2 feet and the striped lizard is probably 2 feet but all tail. Is there a difference in the diet of the Sudan, Black lined and yellow striped plated lizards? Also is there a difference in substrates? I’ve got them on lizard litter. Thanks in advance everyone for your help, Sorry this was so long. |

well first things first yes u can, but i wouldnt keep the yellow throated with larger one that u think is a black line. I have to say tho if he is all black with two yellow striped then he is not a black lined he is G. validus or giant plated lizard and yours sounds close to full grown, i think the yellow could be kept with the sudan as long as they get along ok watch them like a hawk. i keep my black line and sudan together no breeding activity but its also very hard to tell if they are male or female. now if u have done your research then u know that your giant plated needs at least a 6’ by 3’ by 2’(foot) enclousure and the sudan and yellow throat (as long as they are near the same size) should be kept in a 4’ by 2’(feet) by 18"(inches) both species should have a rough basking spot of around 100 deg F and a cool end in the low 80s now one hwat you are feeding them they will accept crickets, meal worms, wax worms, butter worms, fresh fruit is best thing slie strawberries, blue berries, raspberries, kiwi, mango, pear, banana. NO leafy greens at all. they will also accept pinkies or fuzzies (please feed pre killed frozen thawed mice) they wille at raw chicken and turkey( but only in a large moderation maybe ounce a month) hope thsi all helps post pics of your cages and plateds to that would help thanks kirk
there are some pics of ym black lined sudan and cage |

You think its ok to keep a 28 inch lizard in a tank that is just a little bigger. The rule of thumb with most lizards is the same size width as the total length and double or triple the total length for length of the cage. I have a black line in the pictures your is a giant tort chic it will reach around 28 inches the largest one that I have ever seen was 3 feet. so a cage large enough for a suitable basking area and water dish and hide would need to be roughly 6 ffet long 2-3 feet wide and 2 feet tall thanks kirk |

If the different species wont breed, would a G.Major breed with a G.Major bottegoi? From what I have read up the only difference with the 2 is Rough Scaled and Smoother Scaled |
