Rescuing a Sudan Plated, advice please :)

Hello,

I currently own several Egyptian Uro’s and ran across someone with a Sudan Plated rescued from an abusive situation. I dont know a whole lot, but I know he was severely underweight and missing a limb, but the lady has but some weight on it since she rescued it. I have a couple questions about set up. I have a couple enclosures and spare lights, heat, etc, but couldnt really get a straight answer from the care sheets and looking on here. I have a spare 4 foot by 18" wide tank with an undertank heater on one side. I also have a spare CHE element, but would a low watt UV light be better for a basking site? Do they need water (uromastyx cannot have water, so need to ask)? What kind of food and how much?

Any guidance appreciated!

Not much info out there as I also found out too. But I have had mine for about 2 years with out much help from the last owner, Yes they do need a water bowl. Mine gets breakfast and dinner. mine is also full grown probly about 8 years old now. (I hear they can last 30 years!) I do have under tank heat and heat light. I didn’t think uvb was a necessity. the previous owners never had one. I do the heat on one side and a hide on the other. my tank size is 48x 12 1/2x 19 tall. lots of room. He was in a small tank when I got him. But I also think he’s a she! that’s all I got, other wise I have learned some from this site. And some zoo site that has a giant plated. good luck!

Hello from Barney

4ft by 18" would be perfect for the Sudan, If I’m not mistaken you could have a male and female in a tank that size. I use a Basking Spot Light for basking along with a 5.0 UVB light.

For water I use a baking tray full of water, mine loves to "take a dip" and have a drink while he is in there.

Food, Plateds are omnivors so it’s good to offer fresh fruits to your plated daily. For live foods I feed mine mainly on Meal Worms and Pinkies every few days. Make sure to dust the live foods every other day with a Calcium Suppliment as they are like turtles and have kind of like a hard shell.

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for your help!

Here is what I have set up for him. In the picture he is on the floor, but purchased a table the next day, so he is up higher. He also has a basking slate to bask on. I will be adding some more stuff to climb on as I come across it. I have him on white promoso millet that I use for my uro’s, since i have never had a problem with it. Ive had a previous uromastyx die on playground sand right after I switched it. I have a 150 w MV Uv bulb on him and his temps are 95 on the basking and around 75 on either cool end. I have a hide rock, a hide log, and what looks to me like a pimped out pool for lizards. It looks like an "L" shaped rock pool with little steps leading in and out (since he only has 3 legs, I thought the steps would help him get in and out). I am feeding him small crickets, wax worms, and a salad of endive, escarole, and dandelion greens, along with a bit of banana, tomato, or grape. So far the only non-insect he will touch is the dandelion greens, and banana. He is very underweight, so I am feeding him daily to hopefully get his weight up. I dusted the crickets with Rapishi UroDust (caclium and vitamin suppliment) which the crickets promptly ate, so hopefully it will get through to him. I will probably get another fluo for him when I can afford it (we just bought our 3 Egyptian Uromastyx about 2 months about and spent about 1000 on the lizards, set ups and another 250 on3 sets 48" 10.0 fluos and fixtures. So, probably by the end of the year, I will have a fluo on him as well, but for now he has a UVA/B basking spot bulb.

He is very friendly and fits in well with our "herd". I have noticed a lot of shedding the past few days, but I assume it is because he was not being fed well before we got him and was severely underweight, and is starting to fill out a little.

Is it normal for them to enjoy being out and about on your shoulder? 95-105* Ok for basking spot temps (checked with IR temp gun)?

Enjoy the pictures

Any additional advice greatly appreciated.

It is perfectly normal for them to like being out of their tanks, although suprising with yours as it is been mistreated before you got it. has it took a while to get it to sit there with you? I try to handle mine every other day, although some times the male doesn’t like that, only likes it when he wants it.

No, he seemed to like sitting on both of our shoulders just fine... and yes, I was shocked since he was so abused before. He is a pain to catch the first time, though he is easily hand tamed with wax worms. Once we catch him and he calms down, he crawls up our arms to our shoulders. When we put him back in his tank, he will actually turn around and try to crawl back up our arms (did that last night and sat hidden in my ponytail or in the hood of my sweater for about an hour). He (Im guessing it is a he, any idea on how to sex?) is a sweetie.

Sexing them is quite easy. Males have spores on the back legs. Some females have these to but not as big or noticeable. Here is here pic of my males spores so you get the idea.

Sorry about the poor quality, but you can see that they are there (only just lol) I must upgrade my 3megapixel cam :(

Ok, he must be a male. I noticed the "frills" the other day when I was holding him.

thanks a bunch!

I posted in another stand, but I do have a flat paver rock. His enclosure does seem to need some more help, but with the holidays coming up, its been hectic. Here are some Stumpy updated pictures of his hide and of him.

So, on my list of things to get:

1. UV Fluo lamp for left side tank (its really dark in my office and I notice he hangs out under the basking spot all day long)

2. More rocks and hides.

Here is the picture. Hes fattened up quite a bit since we got him and he is a lot more active. He loves his flat rock, but poops on it daily, so I have to keep taking it out to clean, disinfect and dry.

He is doing much better! He is running around his enclosure and eating everything in sight! He loves to come out (once I catch him). I noticed he has really runny smelly poops though. I dont know if this is normal, since my Uro’s have hard little formed poops. I am taking my large Egyptian pair to the vet tomorrow, and its 35 for each additional animal, but I dont know how many animals we can take at once (we have 4 that need to be seen, 3 Egyptian Uros and our Plated). I would like to get a fecal done on him to make sure he doesnt have any parasites.

Mine has runny poop quite often, we have all our lizards checked for parasites when we get them So I wouldn’t really worry about that effecting poop. If you don’t wanna take the Lizard incase they say "No we can’t do all of them" just take a poop samle and tell them you susspect parasites with your plated lizard and they should do a poopy test.

So, I got paid today, so I added a few things to Stumpy’s cage, just to keep everyone updated. It looks awesome and he looked to happy to have stuff to crawl on and over. Maybe as I get a little extra money later on, Ill add another Mv UVB bulb to the left end, b/c he tend to stay directly under his basking bulb, and if Sudan plated are really from Sudan, the hotter I can get it, the better. Right now its got an abient temp around 80 on the cooler end, and 105 on the basking.

As for the additions. I added a rock basking/tunnel on the left end. A climbing tree behind the log (hard to see, blends in with background), and the suspicious looking leaves on the right end (he likes to hide under them).

Also, I added a light (not UV fluo, just a fluorecent light hood to the left end). I am not really happy with it. It doesnt provide much light. I will probably go to home depot this weekend and just get a heat bulb with a hood to place on top. My office is so dark, especially since I live in Portland, or and its pretty gray outside daily, so not much ambient light.

Liking that tank, looks really nice. Have you thought about a UVB strip light on the inside covering 2 3rds of the tank, with the basking light out side as you have it? I am sure there would be a way to set it up with a cover so the lizard doesn;t get to it.

Yeah, unfortunately, I had just bought 3 48" UV fluos before we got Stumpy for our Uro’s, and that ran about 300 dolllars for the bulbs and Flukers hoods. So we are a little strapped for cash, especially with the holidays rolling around. As soon as I have the money, I was planning on switching to a 10.0 Fluo bulb and putting it on top of the mesh, since that is what a 10.0 is rated for. Otherwise I can try and suspend it underneath, but it is already so difficult to get in and out of the cage. Again, once the holidays are over... I will be building 3 8’x4’ for my Egyptians, so once I do that there should be some extra supplies lying around, and I will probably shuffle everything around to make sure everyone has adequate UV... and probably spending another 300 on more lighting to cover the rest of the huge enclosures.... Ugh! It gets overwhelming at times.
