Is one really the loniest number?

This may be a stupid question, but do plated lizards prefer to live solitary or with others. There is a Sudan plated for sale on Craigslist. I have a 4x15x12 tank, but should have a larger one available once I upgrade my Egyptian uro’s to their 10 foot cages in the next few months.

Would I need a second hide? I have a XL hollow rock hide, an XL hide log, and a large water thing. I should be able to upgrade to a 4x2x2 or a 5x2x2 within a year and add more hides, etc

well my lizards really dont care if they are together or apart they are male and female so for them it doesnt matter but not all lizards are like and some only want to be in pairs in mating season and thats it. so in the end it pepends on the lizard

yeah, i cant think of any herd organized reptiles either. I know my uro’s cannot be anywhere near each other, especially our dominant male, as he becomes aggressive (kinda funny- does macho push ups and puffs himself up). My platy seems happy enough I guess alone, just wasnt sure if plated’s were any different than most lizards as I noticed a lot of people had more than one plated in an enclosure.

Keeping males with females long term can cause problems, fist depending on colony setup ie male vs female ratio you may have issues between dominant males for breeding rights, second over the long term females may be over bred, also young or old females may be bred when it’s not healthy for them, or the simple act of repeated "courtship" attepts may lead to stress for females. Puting reptiles together for controled breeding attempts is one thing, housing them together even as a breeding pair will in the end cause stress and shorten lifespan of one the the reptiles.

Maybe check up on shingleback skinks they stay faithfull to each other for decades. Flat Rock Lizards also live in groups (and they’re big groups).

As for the plateds. I bought my male Plated Lizard that was paired with a female Plated Lizard. When I got the male home he just hid all the time, wouldn’t eat. So I went to get the female too and he perked up alot (she was also the same at the shop).

So in my experience, plateds love to be paired and I would advise you NOT to split them if you decided you couldn’t keep them both. Also make sure their is 2 hides, just because they like living together it doesn;t mean they wanna sleep in the same hide constantly. Thats what mine do. Won’t leave each others side untill the night time when the lights go out.

I hope this has helped.
Ron

Decided against it... I think he just needed a little more people attention. I took him out for a while and he crawled up to the top of my head and stayed there for about half an hour. Seemed much happier after and was running around his tank.

im pretty sure in the wild that turtles like living together in ponds and bayous, in captivity many reptiles such as green anoles do much better in groups rather than solitary

other than mating, the only reason a turtle would even consider being with eachother is to bask on top of one other. i don’t know any reptile that to live likes to live with another.

other than lacertas and plated lizards. maybe "domesticated’" reptiles would consider liking another around, but rarely, in my knowledge, do they like to live in groups in the wild.

I’m the same as skitch here. Take one of my plateds away from the other and the one left in the enclosure goes MAD. And there is SOME reptiles that like to be with another one. Check out Shingleback Skinks for example. They stay partners for decades. Flat Rock lizards also, they live in BIG groups. So I have NO idea at all where you got the idea that NO reptiles like to live together.
